FIELDER’S CHOICES: Lewis’ eight-TD feat among many Astonishing Tales

Some unbelievable things happen in high school football, especially in Southern Nevada. The proof is in The Astonishing Tales of Fielder from last week’s games.

Consider Cheyenne running back Myloe Lewis, who scored eight touchdowns in three quarters as the Desert Shields outgunned Western, 72-47. Through five games, Lewis’ 1,025 rushing yards are greater than the team totals of Division I-A Sunset League foes Clark, Faith Lutheran, Pahrump Valley and Western.

Rancho’s field-goal unit produced points for both teams in a 49-3 loss to Liberty. The Rams kicked a 34-yard field goal and had a blocked field goal returned 84 yards for a touchdown.

Legacy accomplished an oddity in a 68-19 rout of Spring Valley, returning two interceptions for touchdowns of the same distance (44 yards).

But the most astonishing tale unfolded in Northern Nevada, where Carson stunned Reed 32-30 on a game-ending call that made “Monday Night Football” officiating look professional. (Type “Reed-Carson final play” into Google and watch the video.)

UNLV moved up in the Fielder Five rankings, but has to do better than 4-44 on the road to trump Athletes in Escalades: 1. Bishop Gorman, 2. UNLV, 3. Liberty, 4. Arbor View, 5. Basic.

I’m uncorking a Hail Mary pass for redemption with tonight’s Week 6 picks:

Green Valley at Basic — Basic receiver Devonte Boyd has been spinning defensive backs in circles all season. The senior needs a nickname, so I’ll give him one: “In Good Hands With All-State.”

Green Valley has the edge defensively, but it might not matter against a Basic team that has scored 47, 59 and 59 points in its first three games.

This will be a shootout, and the Wolves’ overwhelming pass attack will paint the Henderson Bowl trophy blue. … Basic by 5.

Canyon Springs at Liberty — Liberty seems to have added a few pages to its offensive playbook this season. Kai Nacua and Jaylen Mitchell give the Patriots some lightning to go with Niko Kapeli’s thunder.

Liberty’s defense has some question marks, but it’s guaranteed the Patriots will hold Canyon Springs running back Donnel Pumphrey to less than 400 yards rushing. … Liberty by 8.

Legacy at Bishop Gorman — The Longhorns will have to be careful not to get hooked into another sideline scuffle this week. Wrestling season doesn’t begin until November.

After Gorman’s 42-0 rout of Servite (Calif.) last week, a Gaels player tweeted: “Next big game.. PALO #Playoffs.” Good thing no one is looking ahead. … Gorman by 48.

Boulder City at Virgin Valley — The Bulldogs are used to bullying the Eagles. The tables will be turned this year as Boulder City grounds and pounds homecoming into revenge in Mesquite. … Boulder City by 2.

Chaparral at Moapa Valley — The Cowboys have enjoyed their best season in years, but reality is starting to set in.

Jake Repp, Jared Repp and Josh Repp have been piling up the yards and points for Moapa Valley, and I have a nickname for them, too: “Pirate Reppin.” … Moapa Valley by 18.

Spring Mountain at Indian Springs — The Eagles sometimes struggle under the lights, but Spring Mountain quarterback Marcus Thomas is ready to turn one of the state’s historic eight-man rivalries into his personal showcase. … Spring Mountain by 28.
