FIELDER’S CHOICES: My next career? Principal of ‘Fielder Prep’

A new high school basketball factory was in the news this week.

Quest Prep, which is operating out of the YMCA next to Meadows Mall, had its shot at recognized status from the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association rejected. The decision means the Knights cannot play against NIAA schools.

Going to class at the “Y” would be sweet. I’ve got next in the pickup game down the hall.

My boy Eric suggested the possibility of high schools at local 24 Hour Fitness gyms, which got me thinking.

I could be principal of “Fielder Prep” inside a Las Vegas Athletic Club. Students could play their way to a 4.0 GPA by beating me in a game of “H-O-R-S-E.”

Rancho at Las Vegas

Las Vegas had 520 yards of offense in its 55-40 victory over Foothill last week, which would have been more impressive had Foothill not racked up 630.

There won’t be 1,150 total yards in “The Bone Game,” but running back Andrew Moreland and receiver Joshua Mayfield will keep the chains moving for the Wildcats.

The gurus of the bubble screen will retain Sir Herk’s bone with ease. … Las Vegas by 22.

Coronado at Liberty

Uncle Lefty once told me, “Good teams win. Great teams cover.”

Liberty failed to cover as an eight-point favorite in a 23-20 win over Canyon Springs, but I still consider the Patriots a great team.

Liberty’s pass defense has been surprisingly strong, and it will come in handy against the Cougars. … Liberty by 11.

Silverado at Canyon Springs

The Skyhawks slid the ball to running back Alex Cater for 57 carries in last week’s 40-14 win over Del Sol. That was more than three times the number of plays (18) that Del Sol ran from scrimmage, not counting punts.

Silverado’s playbook might be from a 1960s time capsule, but it gets a groovy grade on my sliding scale.

It’s a “1-900-FIELDER” guaranteed futures play that the Skyhawks will slide into a playoff berth, but tonight won’t make for a friendly welcome to the Northeast League. … Canyon Springs by 13.

Legacy at Bonanza

The Longhorns lost 70-0 at Notre Gorman last week, but the horizon is clear with Bowl Championship Series competition in the rear-view mirror.

Legacy running back Charles Julian is one of the state’s best-kept secrets, and he’ll turn the Scatback Bowl into a big-play bonanza. … Legacy by 10.

Moapa Valley at Boulder City

The showdown for Division I-A Sunrise League supremacy is marked a “key game” on all parlay cards for a reason.

The Eagles have been impressive, but Conner Mortensen and Sean McConnell are like two hurricanes coming out of the Pirates’ backfield. … Moapa Valley by 18.

Mojave at Cheyenne

By the time you read this, another retroactive forfeit could have hit town.

Mojave won last Thursday only to lose a separate game the next day by retroactive forfeit, which shows us that time travel is possible when the Clark County School District is involved.

If these teams can finally cut down on turnovers and penalties, the “I-A Sunset Super Bowl” will be fun to watch.

Both teams have explosive rushing attacks and vulnerable defenses, giving the edge to the more experienced team. … Cheyenne by 8.
