FOOTBALL: Laushaul, Williams run over Saints

Stephan Laushaul rushed for 249 yards and four touchdowns, and Agassi Prep’s football team exploded for 43 points in the second quarter on the way to a 63-20 victory over Mountain View on Friday at Rancho.

Kobe Williams added 173 yards rushing, 84 yards receiving and scored three times for the Stars (4-1, 3-0 Division III Southern League), who defeated Mountain View for the first time since 2010.

“It’s very gratifying to have Stephan and Kobe be a 1-2 punch,” Agassi Prep coach Ben Fermon said. “We knew schools would come in and try to take (Williams) out. We had to have someone else to turn to.”

Agassi Prep ran only seven offensive plays in the second quarter, but pulled away thanks to three big plays on special teams. After the Saints (2-3, 1-2) closed to within 28-20 on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Ian Locke to Greg Tomaino, Jonas Patterson returned the ensuing kickoff 62 yards for a score. Williams ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Stars a 36-20 lead with 1:54 remaining in the first half.

Mountain View’s Connor LeBoeuf then fumbled during the kickoff return and James Showers recovered to set up Kameron Burrell’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Williams that put the Stars up 43-20 at halftime.

Burrell returned a fumble on an attempted punt 5 yards for a touchdown earlier in the second quarter.

“We had to have a change of tide,” Fermon said. “Our special teams did give us a spark. We went into halftime, made some adjustments, came out and in the third quarter we jumped on it.”

Laushaul had touchdown runs of 33, 19 and 39 yards in the third quarter as Agassi Prep scored the game’s final 35 points. The Stars finished with 440 yards rushing.

Locke threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns for the Saints, and LeBoeuf finished with four receptions for 121 yards and scored twice. LeBoeuf had a 68-yard touchdown catch to put Mountain View up 6-0 late in the first quarter and added a 34-yard score in the second quarter.

Needles 55, Calvary Chapel 0 — At Needles, Kobee McCorkle had 12 carries for 114 yards and two touchdowns as the Mustangs ran by the Lions.

McCorkle scored on runs of 28 and 15 yards and added a 2-yard receiving TD, all in the first half as the Mustangs took a 37-0 lead into halftime.

Senior quarterback William Dunn, who did not attempt a pass in the second half, finished 3-for-7 for 39 yards and two touchdowns. He connected on a 20-yard TD pass to Trenton Poe-Evans with 1 minute, 50 seconds left in the first quarter to make it 14-0.

Needles (5-0, 3-0 Southern League) never took its foot of the gas, and ran for 225 yards. Derek Wagstaff carried the ball seven times for 45 yards and a touchdown, and Zhiyong Xie added 36 yards and two scores. In two of his first three rushing attempts, Xie scored on runs of 14 and 13 yards.

Mauricio Santos was 4-for-4 on extra points and had a 38-yard field goal for the Mustangs, who held Calvary Chapel to 27 total yards of offense. The Lions only had 1 total yard in the opening half, including minus-7 on the ground.

Ben Tanner finished with 12 carries for 33 yards for Calvary Chapel (0-4, 0-3), and teammate Christian O’Kelley was 6 of 19 for 7 yards and an interception.
