Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here’s a look at some of this week’s top high school sports events.

FOOTBALL

Thursday — Arbor View at Legacy, 7 p.m.

The Aggies (6-1, 4-0 Northwest League), currently ranked No. 3 in the latest coaches poll, can wrap up the Northwest League’s top seed with a win in this one. Eighth-ranked Legacy (5-1, 2-1), meanwhile, is looking to rebound from a 22-19 loss to Faith Lutheran on Oct. 7, and would be in position to take the league’s top seed with a victory.

Friday — Sierra Vista at Durango, 7 p.m.

This is an unlikely battle of unbeatens in the Class 4A Southwest League. Sierra Vista (7-0, 4-0 Southwest) was just 3-7 last season playing in the Division I-A (now Class 3A) Sunset League. Durango (6-0, 3-0) entered the season with a 16-game losing streak.

GIRLS GOLF

Monday and Tuesday — Class 4A state tournament at Carson City, 10 a.m.

All eyes at Eagle Valley-West Course will be on Coronado, as the Cougars chase their third consecutive title. Coronado is coming off a record-breaking performance in the Sunrise Region tournament. Palo Verde’s Annick Haczkiewicz is the defending individual champion.

Monday and Tuesday — Class 3A state tournament at Elko, 9:30 a.m.

It should be a tight battle between Boulder City, Elko and Lowry for the team championship. Lani Potter, the Southern Region champion, anchors the Eagles’ lineup and is the only player in the field capable of breaking par at Ruby View, a huge advantage for Boulder City as it seeks its first team state title since 2010.

BOYS SOCCER

Monday – Arbor at Cimarron-Memorial, 3:30 p.m.

After the Spartans routed top-ranked Palo Verde, their games have become appointment viewing. They play twice this week, and the Aggies are desperate to string some wins together to get back into the thick of things in the Northwest League.

Wednesday – Western at Sunrise Mountain 3:30 p.m.

The Class 3A Sunset League winner could be named this week. The Miners lead now, but two tough matchups, including Wednesday against a strong Warriors team, may end up deciding the league champion.

GIRLS SOCCER

Monday — Shadow Ridge at Faith Lutheran, 3 p.m.

This match probably determines which team will get the final playoff spot in a crowded Northwest League. The Mustangs, who currently hold the fourth spot, won 1-0 in the last meeting, but fifth-place Faith Lutheran has found its groove recently and is coming off a big win at Centennial.

Monday — Western at Cheyenne, 3:30 p.m.

The winner here will take control of first place in the Class 3A Sunset League with only three league games remaining. Western, which won the 3-2 in the last meeting on Sept. 21, will turn to seniors Ellyson Reynada and Katherine Realegeno.

The Desert Shields counter with Yadira Erives, who ranks second in scoring in Class 3A with 19 goals and four assists.

Wednesday — Arbor View at Palo Verde, 3:30 p.m.

The Aggies have yet to lose this season, but do have two ties to their name — one coming to Palo Verde on Sept. 23. Can the Panthers pull the upset this time and essentially seal the Northwest League title?

Wednesday — Las Vegas at Rancho, 4:30 p.m.

Rancho hasn’t made the playoffs since the 2011-2012 season, but could be in position for a league title with a win over the Wildcats in this Northeast League match. The Rams will need a big game from Saipress Jones, who is one of the league’s top players as a sophomore.

Friday — Bishop Gorman at Centennial, 3 p.m.

If the season ended today, this would be a first round match-up in the Class 4A Sunset Region playoffs. Gorman currently is second in the Southwest, while Centennial sits in third in the Northwest. A win here will be a good confidence boost for either team heading into the playoffs.

TENNIS

Thursday through Saturday – Class 4A state tournament at Reno

The state tournaments begin with team semifinals on Thursday at Caughlin Club in Reno. The team finals and individual quarterfinals will be played on Friday, with the individual semifinals and finals on Saturday.

Thursday through Saturday – Class 3A state tournaments at Reno and Truckee, California

The team semifinals will be on Thursday at the Reno Tennis Center. The 3A tournaments move to the Tahoe Donner Tennis Center in Truckee, California on Friday for the team finals and individual quarterfinals. The individual finals will take place on Saturday at the Donner Tennis Center.

VOLLEYBALL

Monday — Palo Verde at Centennial, 6 p.m.

The Panthers and Bulldogs are engaged in a five-team slugfest for the final three playoff spots in the Northwest League. Palo Verde, which is in third place, defeated the Bulldogs in four sets in the first meeting.

Tuesday — Durango at Bonanza, 6 p.m.

The Bengals try to avenge a five-set loss to the Trailblazers and grab a share of second place in the Southwest League.

Tuesday — Shadow Ridge at Faith Lutheran, 6 p.m.

The top two teams in the Northwest League square off. The Mustangs swept Faith Lutheran in the first meeting and have lost only one set in league play.

Wednesday — Las Vegas at Rancho, 6 p.m.

First place in the Northeast League is at stake when Rancho hosts the Wildcats. The Rams needed four sets to get past their rivals when the teams met Sept. 27.

Thursday — Calvary Chapel at The Meadows, 5 p.m.

The only undefeated teams in the Class 2A Southern League square off in a doubleheader.

Thursday — Coronado at Green Valley, 6 p.m.

The three-time defending state champion Cougars are hot on the heels of second-place Green Valley in the Southeast League. The Gators won the first matchup, 3-1.
