Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of this week’s top high school sports matchups.

CROSS COUNTRY

Saturday — Larry Burgess Las Vegas Invitational at Sunset Park, 6:45 a.m.

One of the top meets every year, the event named for the former Basic coaching great shouldn’t disappoint this season, either. The meet kicks off with an open race at 6:45 a.m., with the first high school varsity race scheduled for 9 a.m. More than 40 schools ae expected to participate.

FOOTBALL

Friday — Green Valley at Palo Verde, 7 p.m.

The Gators are coming off a 49-31 loss to Centennial and will try to bounce back against the Panthers. Palo Verde was shut out in its opener against Las Vegas, and is trying to prove it is still one of the top teams in the Sunset Region.

Friday — Eldorado at Chaparral, 7 p.m.

One of the state’s longest standing rivalries, the Sundevils and Cowboys will meet in the “Cleat Game.” Chaparral has won three of the last four meetings, including a 41-8 victory last season.

Friday — Bishop Gorman at St. John Bosco (Califnia), 7:30 p.m.

Another major test for the Gaels as they try to capture a third consecutive mythical national championship. The Braves (2-0) have yet to give up a point this season, and are ranked No. 8 in the nation by USA Today. Biaggio Ali Walsh, the reigning state player of the year, is expected to return for Gorman after sitting out the team’s 46-10 win over Cocoa (Florida) with an ankle injury.

BOYS SOCCER

Tuesday — Arbor View at Canyon Springs, 3:30 p.m.

Arbor View has yet to lose and travels to face a green Canyon Springs team, which has played just one game this season. Watch Nicklaus Dongmann for the Aggies, who leads the team with four assists and 10 points.

Friday — Durango at Cimarron-Memorial, 3 p.m.

Durango features two of the top goal-scorers in the area in Oscar Rodriguez and Alfredo Robles-Rodriguez who each had four goals in the team’s first seven games. Cimarron’s Dresden Quackenbush also had four goals in the Spartans’ first five contests.

GIRLS SOCCER

Tuesday — Silverado at Sierra Vista, 3 p.m.

The Skyhawks return 10 letter winners, including senior forward Victoria Bravo, who should be one of the Sunrise Region’s top players this season. The Mountain Lions will counter with senior standout Calista Reyes, who is committed to Pepperdine.

Friday — Arbor View at Foothill, 3 p.m.

The four-time defending state champions are taking a mini road trip — 34 miles — to face the Falcons, who will be seeking their fifth consecutive playoff appearance this season.

Tuesday-Saturday — Las Vegas Kick-Off Tournament at Green Valley and Faith Lutheran

Pool play in the 12-team tournament begins on Tuesday with games at Green Valley and Faith Lutheran. The tournament continues through Saturday at both sites, with a championship game scheduled for 1 p.m. at Faith Lutheran.

BOYS TENNIS

Tuesday — Bishop Gorman at Clark, 3 p.m.

Both teams started off 3-0, and should be among the contenders for region and state titles. The Chargers won the last four Division I-A state titles, and move up to Class 4A this year. Gorman won the last Division I state crown, and will be among the contenders for the title in Class 4A this season. It figures to be one of the top regular season matchups of the year.

GIRLS TENNIS

Wednesday — Foothill at Liberty, 3 p.m.

Liberty has had no issue in its two league matches so far, winning by a combined 31-5 against Basic and Green Valley. The Patriots will have their showdown with Coronado soon enough, but for now they are on a roll that is fun to watch.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Wednesday — Shadow Ridge at Coronado, 6 p.m.

Last season’s region champions square off. The experienced Mustangs are off to a strong start, while Coronado, the three-time defending state champion, swept its first two matches.

Wednesday — Palo Verde at Silverado, 6 p.m.

The Panthers will provide a good measuring stick for Silverado, which is expected to contend for the Southeast League title.

Thursday — Palo Verde at Foothill, 6 p.m.

The Panthers continue their tough stretch against another quality opponent from the Southeast League. The Falcons have 10 letter winners back from last year’s team that reached the Sunrise Region final.

Thursday — Silverado at Faith Lutheran, 6 p.m.

This is the first major test against a Class 4A opponent for the Crusaders, who moved up to the large-school classification this season.
