Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of this week’s top high school sports matchups.

CROSS COUNTRY

Saturday — Labor Day Classic at Palo Verde, 8 a.m.

The cross country season gets going this week, and the week’s running action will be highlighted by this meet, which kicks off which features two boys races and two girls races. The meet kicks off with a freshman-sophomore boys race, and will conclude with the junior-senior girls.

FOOTBALL

Friday — Liberty at Westlake (Texas), 5:30 p.m.

The Patriots passed a big local test in Week 1, knocking off Sunset Region power Arbor View, 27-23. But now Liberty faces a national test against Westlake, which is coming off a 32-29 victory over Katy (Texas), which was ranked No. 11 in the nation by USA Today.

BOYS SOCCER

Monday — Southern Nevada Kick-Off Classic, 6 p.m. at Green Valley

The season-opening tournament wraps up with the championship game.

Friday — Cimarron-Memorial at Tech, 4:30 p.m.

Two teams that made the state semifinals in their respective classifications meet in what could be one of the best boys soccer games of the season.

GIRLS SOCCER

Monday — Centennial at Coronado, 3 p.m.

The Bulldogs, who lost to Arbor View in the Sunset Region final last season, will meet last year’s state runner-up. Coronado lost Taylor Kornieck to graduation, but still have Olivia Meza and Katelyn Moxley to lead the offense.

The Bulldogs, on the other hand, brought back nine starters from last season and should again compete for the region title.

Thursday — Faith Lutheran at Bishop Gorman, 4 p.m.

The Crusaders won the Division I-A state championship last season, but now are playing up in the Class 4A Northwest League. Senior Beka Lescenski, who recorded 16 shutouts last season, is one of Southern Nevada’s top goalkeepers, but she will have her hands full keeping Gorman standouts Hannah Borgel, Arlie Jones and Tavin Hayes in check.

GIRLS TENNIS

Tuesday — Legacy at Palo Verde, 3 p.m.

Palo Verde has dominated the girls tennis scene in Nevada for the last decade and begins its season needing to find replacements on their deep roster for the sisters Chloe and Sophie Henderson, last year’s state doubles champions.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Tuesday — Bishop Gorman at Shadow Ridge, 6 p.m.

This is a rematch of last year’s Sunset Region final that the Mustangs won in three sets. Both teams are expected to contend for the region title again this season.

THE LATEST
