NIAA cancels events in six Northern Nevada counties

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association has canceled all state-sanctioned outdoor athletic activities in six Northern Nevada counties for this weekend.

Because of poor air quality due to smoke from the Yosemite wildfire, the NIAA canceled all soccer, cross country, tennis and golf events Friday and Saturday in Washoe, Douglas, Carson, Lyon, Storey and Churchill counties, as well as any events involving teams traveling to Mono or El Dorado counties in California.

A handful of Las Vegas teams were scheduled to compete in a cross country invitational and soccer tournaments this weekend in the Reno area, but those events probably will not be rescheduled.

Schools do have the option of attempting to move contests outside of those areas. As a result, several Division I football games have been moved.

The Douglas at Reno game will be played at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Winnemucca.

Instead of an opening-week home game, McQueen will visit Nevada Union (Calif.) at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Carson-Hug game has been moved to 1 p.m. Saturday in Lovelock.

Damonte Ranch and North Valleys will travel to Winnemucca to play at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Spanish Springs-Bishop Manogue game was canceled and will not be rescheduled.
