NOTES: Brown’s options lure Del Sol’s Weinstock

Del Sol senior Evan Weinstock had more to consider with recruiting than most high school football standouts.

The receiver/defensive back also is a versatile track star for the Dragons’ track team and had a 4.49 grade-point average last semester with plans of a career in medicine.

Weinstock will look to get the best of each world in college. He said he is “pretty sure” he’ll continue his football career at Brown, choosing the Bears over football scholarship offers from Northern Arizona and Southern Utah, and Colorado in track.

“The Ivy League is a good class of athletics, and with the academics, you can’t beat it,” he said. “I’m looking forward to going out to Brown and doing multiple sports, seeing what I’m best at.”

Weinstock, the Review-Journal’s Class 4A State Player of the Year in football, visited Brown the weekend of Jan. 15 and Colorado last weekend. He also drew interest from UNLV in football, and Arizona and UCLA in track.

“Definitely, I’ve had a tough time deciding,” he said. “They’re all great options.”

RECENT DECISIONS — Other seniors to make recent commitments include: Canyon Springs girls shot put and discus thrower Destanae Howerton-Davis (Utah); Palo Verde boys swimmers Cody Miller (Indiana) and Gianni Sesto (Iowa); Palo Verde boys lacrosse players Mike Quinn (Vermont) and JoJo Milosevic (Mesa State, Colo.); and Arbor View softball players Amanda Jones (Western Nebraska College) and Savanah Webster (Salt Lake College).

FORFEITS — Bonanza’s wrestling team lost three matches and Centennial’s girls soccer team one because of the use of ineligible athletes, according to the Clark County School District’s athletic office.

Centennial forfeited its Jan. 20 match against Palo Verde, which had been a 0-0 tie.

Bonanza used an ineligible wrestler in six league meets. All six matches were re-scored to reflect a forfeit at the weight class.

As a result, the Bengals’ wins against Spring Valley, Sierra Vista and Pahrump all became Bonanza losses. Scoring changes did not affect the winning and losing team in the Bengals’ matches against Desert Oasis, Durango and Western.

FIGHTING CANCER — Several local schools are participating in Coaches vs. Cancer at basketball games today through Saturday.

Schools participating include Canyon Springs, Chaparral, Cimarron-Memorial, Coronado, Desert Oasis, Foothill, Henderson International, Sandy Valley and Spring Valley.

SHOWDOWN — Bishop Gorman’s boys basketball team will play Mater Dei (Calif.) in the Nike Extravaganza on Feb. 6 in Santa Ana, Calif. Gorman is ranked No. 12 nationally by USA Today, one spot behind Mater Dei.

GRIMBLE HONORED — Gorman senior tight end Xavier Grimble was named to the PARADE All-America High School Football Team.

Grimble, who has committed to Southern California, was among 58 players from 24 states chosen.

MISSING UNIFORMS — Canyon Springs’ junior varsity boys basketball uniforms were stolen along with a coach’s vehicle from the Rancho parking lot Monday, Pioneers varsity coach Daryl Branham said.

Branham said the program received a donation from Supplier for Champions to provide for new uniforms.

“We don’t have any leads right now as to the car or the jerseys,” Branham said Wednesday.

“We’ve got to move forward. We appreciate the support from the community."
