NOTES: Centennial defensive lineman enters recruiting deluge

Greg Rogers still is learning the ins and outs of recruiting, so the standout defensive lineman from Centennial didn't know that college coaches could begin contacting him and other members of the class of 2017 on Sept. 1.

Luckily, Rogers found out just before his inbox was flooded.

"To see all those schools contact me, all those big schools, was pretty exciting," Rogers said. "I really enjoyed it. I got to have some good talks with coaches."

While most of the local recruiting spotlight has focused on the uber-talented crop of juniors at Bishop Gorman, the 6-foot-4-inch, 285-pound Rogers also has attracted the attention of several Power 5-conference schools.

Rogers was offered a scholarship by Colorado on Sunday — that brings his total up to 11 offers — and has heard from a handful of other top-25 teams in the past nine days, including Notre Dame, Oregon, Southern California and Texas A&M.

"These last six months have been hectic, all the attention he's gotten," Centennial coach Leon Evans said. "It's good for the program, and I tell the kids all the time, 'Use it as a recruiting tool for yourself.'"

Rogers has offers from more than half of the Pac-12 Conference and also drew interest in the spring from the likes of Alabama and Florida State.

Rogers made an unofficial visit to UCLA this summer and also visited UNLV in March.

"Right now, I'd have to say UCLA is my favorite," Rogers said. "A lot of the schools are still high up on my list. I've got good relationships with every school that has offered me so far."

Rogers is a four-star prospect and rated the nation's No. 3 defensive tackle (No. 45 overall) by Scout.com for the class of 2017. He is the No. 10 defensive tackle and No. 142 overall by Rivals.com.

Rogers registered 37 tackles and two sacks as a sophomore and has one sack this season for Centennial (2-0), which visits Palo Verde (1-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday.

"When Greg decides to play football and go hard every snap, it's his explosion off the football," Evans said. "He's so quick for his size, it's very hard to block him."

* NO CHANGE FOR GAELS — Bishop Gorman remained No. 1 in the USA Today Super 25 football poll after last week's 38-20 victory at Bingham (Utah).

The Gaels (2-0) put their 26-game winning streak on the line Friday at Bellevue (Wash.). The Wolverines are best known for halting the record 151-game winning streak of De La Salle (Calif.) in 2004.

* CALVARY CHAPEL FORFEITS — Calvary Chapel will forfeit Friday's football game to Agassi Prep, Calvary Chapel athletic director Martha O'Kelley confirmed Tuesday.

The Lions began the year with only 16 players on the roster, including four freshmen, and lost four players to injury in the first two weeks of the season.

Calvary Chapel's game against The Meadows on Friday was stopped in the third quarter with the Lions trailing 46-0.

* THOMPSON HONORED — Coronado setter Cali Thompson was named one of the nation's top 250 recruits in the class of 2016 by PrepVolleyball.com.

The 5-11 Thompson was a first-team All-Southern Nevada pick as a junior after helping the Cougars to their second straight Division I state title. She has orally committed to Portland.
