NOTES: Charity game aims to raise $40,000, give all-stars a sense of purpose

This year’s West Charleston Lions Club Charity All-Star High School Football Game will have extra significance.
For the 40th anniversary of the game, officials are hoping to raise $40,000, said John Klumbach, the game’s co-chairman.
Tickets are a $5 donation; additional donations can be made. Klumbach said last year’s event raised more than $26,000, with proceeds going to the Blind Center of Nevada, the Lions Burn Center at University Medical Center, the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation and others.
“It’s a very significant thing for the charities,” Klumbach said. “The game helps raise money, and it gives (players) a sense that they’re participating in something bigger than the game.”
The game will be played at 7 p.m. June 4 at Bishop Gorman. In the week before the game, seniors from the Sunset and Sunrise region teams will tour the Blind Center of Nevada and meet patients.
Gorman’s Tony Sanchez will coach the Sunset team, while Liberty’s Rich Muraco will coach the Sunrise squad.
MORE ALL-STARS — The Southern Nevada Girls Basketball Coaches Association Class 4A All-Star Night will be held Thursday at Basic.
The Southeast League all-stars will play the Northeast League all-stars at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Southwest against the Northwest at 7 p.m.
The 19th Green Valley Rotary Club High School All-Star Soccer Games will be Wednesday at UNLV, with the girls game at 5 p.m. followed by the boys game at 7.
SOCCER AWARD — Palo Verde sophomore midfielder Lauren Kaskie was named the Gatorade Nevada Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
Kaskie had 10 goals and 10 assists this season while helping the Panthers (18-3-3) reach the Sunset Region semifinals.
WRESTLING HONORS — Las Vegas High senior 152-pounder Napoleon Aniciete was named Nevada Wrestler of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
