RECRUITING: Moapa Valley’s McDermand chooses UNR

Moapa Valley senior lineman Mat McDermand made an oral commitment to UNR, Pirates coach Brent Lewis confirmed on Monday.

McDermand's commitment is nonbinding, and the first day he can sign a letter of intent is Feb. 5. The Wolf Pack's coaches cannot comment until that time.

The 6-foot-6-inch, 260-pound McDermand was the Division I-A state lineman of the year after helping the Pirates (11-1) reach the state semifinals. In addition to anchoring Moapa Valley's offensive line, McDermand was fourth on the team with 74 tackles.

McDermand made an official visit to UNLV this month. He was also drawing interest from Dartmouth, Northern Arizona, Southern Utah and Texas-El Paso.
