RECRUITING: Southern Cal going for set of Gaels’ Grimble cousins
Bishop Gorman’s Xavier Grimble is widely ranked as the nation’s No. 1 tight end in the class of 2010 and has given an oral commitment to Southern California.
But he might not turn out as the most sought-after recruit in his own family.
That title could belong to Jalen Grimble, a defensive end entering his junior season with the Gaels.
Jalen recently landed scholarship offers from USC and Louisiana State to go with previous offers from Utah, Texas Tech, UCLA and UNLV.
“I’m really excited about it,” he said. “Entering my (junior) year I really didn’t think I’d have this much hype.”
Grimble’s stock has gone up since a strong showing at USC’s Rising Stars Camp on June 24 and 25. The 6-foot-3-inch, 250-pounder had 28 tackles and four sacks as a sophomore.
Grimble said he has no timetable to decide on a college, nor an early favorite, but hopes to make unofficial visits to Utah and LSU this summer.
He said he won’t necessarily wind up at USC just because Xavier committed to the Trojans, but he has been able to lean on his cousin for advice.
“I’ve learned things to do, what not to do, things to say,” Grimble said. “I have learned a lot on what he’s been through.”
Including Xavier Grimble, four Gorman seniors-to-be have committed to Pac-10 schools. Defensive end Alex Turner and linebacker Evan Palelei committed to Stanford, and offensive tackle Geoffrey Gibson chose California.
