ROUNDUP: Agassi Prep runs over West Wendover

Just before the season began, Agassi Prep football coach Colt Goodman reluctantly shifted from a spread option offense to a pro set.

The decision, Goodman said, was made after the Stars “lost five guys with speed” to academic issues.

Saturday, though, it appeared Agassi Prep might be better off.

The Stars rolled up 210 rushing yards on their way to an 18-0 win over West Wendover in a Class 2A Southern League opener at Cheyenne.

“We kept it simple, and it seemed to pay off for us,” said Goodman, still drying from a Gatorade shower given to him by players.

At the forefront of the attack was sophomore running back DeVonn Porter, who carried 22 times for 158 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on runs of 10 and 81 yards — the latter an electrifying sprint down the right sideline.

“I ran to the left and the hole closed, so I cut it back,” Porter said of the 81-yard run.

Agassi Prep (1-1, 1-0) led 18-0 at halftime, also getting a 32-yard touchdown run on a reverse by Dimitri Amos.

With gusting winds, four of the 18 passes in the game were intercepted, including the Stars’ only attempt.

“As soon as I saw the wind, I knew if we could get some first downs and control the clock, our defense would do the rest of the job,” Goodman said.

The Stars forced five turnovers and held the Wolverines (0-3, 0-1) to 112 yards of offense. Chris Mitchell, Terrell Kemp and LeShawn Sims picked off passes for Agassi Prep’s defense.

West Wendover struggled without starting running back Junior Rodriguez, who missed the game with a knee injury.

The Wolverines had a 58-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Douglas to Miles Bostock wiped away because of a holding call 4:47 before halftime.

“Penalties killed us today,” West Wendover coach Tyler Peterson said. “We were out of sync. I don’t know if it was the trip down or what.”

Peterson said the Stars could become a team to watch with 12 freshmen and six sophomores on their roster, including Porter.

“If that’s just freshmen and sophomores, look out in a couple years,” he said.

Beatty 58, Sandy Valley 0 — At Sandy Valley, Anthony Turner accounted for six touchdowns as the Hornets rolled to the win in the Class 1A Southern League opener for both schools.

Turner rushed for 124 yards and three TDs on just seven carries. He also was 4-for-6 passing for 55 yards and three scores.

Tony Dare added a 29-yard touchdown run and a 9-yard touchdown catch, and Kyle Marchand caught two TD passes for Beatty.

Defensively, Jacob Carrol returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown for the Hornets.
