Speedy Fountain Valley overwhelms Foothill

Foothill coach Marty Redmond stood at midfield Friday after the Falcons’ season opener, pondering what had just happened to his team.

“We just ran into a good football team,” Redmond said. “They’re very fast and very skilled.”

Kyle Middlebrooks of Fountain Valley (Calif.) rushed for 147 yards on 17 carries and scored four touchdowns, relentlessly pounding Foothill in a 49-14 road victory.

Fountain Valley quickly established the tempo, with Steven Santana connecting with Middlebrooks for a 66-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter.

Santana hit Ryan Manzon minutes later with a 4-yard TD pass, and the Baron extended their lead to 21-0 before Foothill scored on Carson Warr’s 1-yard plunge in the second quarter.

The Falcons trailed 28-7 at halftime and had no success containing Fountain Valley in the second half. The Barons finished with 405 total yards and held Foothill to 163.

“Their speed was just incredible,” Redmond said. “I don’t know if we’ll see another team that quick all season. We’ve just got to use this game for experience.”

Algernon Sewell scored on a 9-yard run for the Falcons in the fourth quarter and finished with 60 yards on 18 carries.

Santana completed 9 of 12 passes for three touchdowns and 169 yards for Fountain Valley.
