Desert Oasis 2013 Boys Golf Capsule

DESERT OASIS

Head coach: Larry Goins, fifth season

Returning lettermen: Four

Top golfers: David Atwood (So.), Matt Banak (So.), Joe Bennecke (Sr.), Luke Derentz (Jr.), Niko Gonnella (Sr.), Zach Lachica (Fr.), Brad Louder (Jr.), Gabriel Paxton (Fr.), Sam Tietjen (Sr.), Justin Wholey (Jr.)

Outlook: The Diamondbacks return four lettermen, including four-year starter Gonnella, who placed 10th in the Sunset Region meet and had a 75.2 average in league play.

In addition, Tietjen transferred from McQueen after placing 11th in the Northern Region meet last year and should be a weapon.

"We expect to compete for the Southwest League title with Bishop Gorman and Centennial and to contend for the Sunset Region," Goins said. "Gonnella should be among the top players in the region, and Bennecke and Wholey are much improved.

"Having lost two quality players to graduation, we are rebuilding, but expect to be much better in May than in March."
