Benjamin Sawaia tied a Class 4A state record with a round of 6-under-par 66 at Chimera on Thursday and helped Coronado’s boys golf team set a state record with a team score of 16-under in a Southeast League match.
Sawaia had six birdies and no bogeys in his round to match the record set by Galena’s Matt Kinsinger in 2003 and tied by Arbor View’s Cameron Gambini at Paiute on Wednesday.
The overall state record for an 18-hole winning score is 9-under, set by Boulder City’s Dusty Craddock in 2007.
Coronado also got rounds of 67 from Dylan Fritz, 69 from Brett Sodetz and 70 from Will Moser for a team score of 272.
The mark of 16-under is one stroke better than the state record Coronado set on the same course last year, though that was with five counting scores. Nevada adopted a four-golfer team score policy this year. Joey Dotta shot 1-over 73 for Coronado, which would have tied the previous five-score mark.
Foothill’s Hunter Esparza shot 70, and Noah MacFawn added a 71 for the Falcons, who finished second in the match with a score of 296. Liberty was third with a 336.
Boulder City wins Sunrise match
At Painted Desert, Blake Schaper earned medalist honors with a 5-over 77 and helped Boulder City to victory in a Sunrise League match.
The Eagles took all of the top five spots and finished with a team score of 330. Virgin Valley shot 396 to take second place, and Sky Pointe was third at 430.
Jackson Wright added an 83, and Kyle Carducci and Landon Key each shot 85 for Boulder City.
