SMALL SCHOOLS: Virgin Valley shares lead, Baeza one shot back

Virgin Valley’s Ryan Baeza carded a 4-over-par 75 on Tuesday and is in fourth place, just one stroke off the lead, after the opening round of the Class 3A state tournament at The Canyons in Mesquite.

Lowry’s Joe Dendary, Spring Creek’s Homer Andrae and Truckee’s Allan Nousiainen share the lead at the midway point after each shot 74. Moapa Valley’s Cody Kelly is fifth at 77.

Virgin Valley and Lowry are tied for first place in the team standings after an opening-round 422. Spring Creek is third in the four-team field at 436.

Wednesday’s final round will be played at Falcon Ridge.

CLASS 2A

Mountain View’s Dennis Bee shot 11-over 82 and is tied for 15th place in the Class 2A state tournament at Rivers Edge in Needles, Calif.

North Tahoe’s Alec Griffith is the individual leader at the halfway point with a 77, one stroke better than four other golfers.

North Tahoe also leads the team standings with a first-round score of 407. Whittell is second at 408 with Battle Mountain and Needles sharing third at 443. Lake Mead is sixth of six teams at 502.

The tournament concludes Wednesday.
