Sunset snaps skid, tops Sunrise in Sager’s Cup golf

Sunset Region golfers won five of the eight singles matches Friday to help the region to a 7½ -3½ win over the Sunrise Region in the Sager's Cup event at Bear's Best Golf Club.

The event annually showcases each region's top golfers. The Sunset leads the all-time series, 6-4 and snapped the Sunrise's three-year winning streak.

Bonanza's Alex Jordan, Desert Oasis' Niko Gonnella, Palo Verde's Brandon Bauman, Shadow Ridge's Ben Davis and Bishop Gorman's Christian James each won a singles match for the Sunset, which also got victories from the tandem of Cimarron-Memorial's Brandon Smith and Palo Verde's Bradley Collett in alternate shot, and the pairing of Palo Verde's Joe Ender and Faith Lutheran's John Bowers in best ball.

The Sunrise Region got singles wins from a pair of Coronado golfers — Michael Alvarez and Michael Kirby — and got a win from the duo of Foothill's Connor Bodin and Nick Grinder in the scramble.

Arbor View's Sam Dickey and Foothill's Andrew Chu were all square in their singles match with each player earning ½ point.
