Faith Lutheran, Clark, Pahrump lead after first day of region golf
October 9, 2018 - 7:40 pm
Darkness crept in to complicate the end of the first day of the Mountain Region girls golf tournament on Tuesday at Siena, but one team emerged with the lead.
Faith Lutheran shot 318 as a team Tuesday, and the Crusaders’ Gracie Olkowski shot a 3-under-par 69 to lead the individuals.
Centennial is seven strokes behind the Crusaders as a team, and Centennial’s McKenzi Hall is two strokes behind Olkowski in the individual race.
“Good and okay,” Faith Lutheran coach Paul Brown said of his team’s round. “We’re so pleased with Gracie, with her round today. “
Palo Verde is in third with a 377, and Las Vegas is fourth at 502.
Olkowski will take her two-stroke lead into the final day of the tournament Wednesday at Stallion Mountain, with Arbor View’s Kyndall Newman (73) and Faith Lutheran’s Morgan Goldstein (74) also on her tail. Tee time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
“Excited for my girls because I know they are chomping at the bit for tomorrow’s round already,” Brown said. “They’re troopers.”
Clark leads Desert Region
At Siena, Riana Mission of Clark carded a 4-under 68 to take the lead after the first day of the Desert Region tournament.
Mission leads by four strokes over Coronado’s Victoria Estrada, and by five strokes over Sierra Vista’s Aliyah Williams.
The Chargers shot 321 as a team to take the opening-round lead in the team standings. Bishop Gorman is second with 332, followed by Tech (378), Liberty (417) and Green Valley (421).
Clark never has won a region girls golf tournament, and finished as the runner-up in the Division I-A (now Class 3A) four consecutive times from 2012 to 2015.
Five-time defending region and four-time defending state champion Coronado did not have enough golfers to qualify for the team scores.
The tournament continues at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday at Stallion Mountain.
Pahrump edging Boulder City
At The Palms, Pahrump Valley shot 367 as a team to take a slight edge over Boulder City in the Class 3A Southern Region tournament.
Boulder City trails by seven strokes. Pahrump and Boulder City are the only teams with enough golfers to qualify.
Western’s Carolyn Lemon took the individual lead by shooting 8-over 80, with Pahrump’s Breanne Nygaard one stroke behind.
The final day of the tournament begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday at CasaBlanca.
