GOLF HONORS: Faith Lutheran’s Becker leads I-A winners

Faith Lutheran’s Julia Becker was the most dominant girls golfer in the state this fall.

The senior shot 1-under-par 143 for the two-day Division I-A state golf tournament to win her second consecutive state title and lead the Crusaders to the team championship. For her efforts, she was named the Division I-A Southern Region Player of the Year by the coaches.

Becker was joined on the first team by teammate Sydney Smith, Boulder City’s Lani Potter and Clark’s Sabrina Ho, Grace Kang and Cassandra Ho.

Faith Lutheran’s Mark Cheney was the Coach of the Year.

Sunrise Region individual champion Mercedes Khumnark was named the Division I Sunrise Region Player of the Year. Sunset Region champion Allison Weiderman was named the Sunset Region Player of the Year.

They were joined on the All-Las Vegas first team by Coronado’s Samantha Penor and Isabella Martinez, Desert Oasis’ Ashley Malone and Bonanza’s Rebecca Oertel.

Coronado’s Joe Sawaia was the Sunrise Region Coach of the Year. Bishop Gorman’s Jim Stanfill took the Sunset coaching honor.
