Suspension of round might lead to playoff

Blame it on the par-5 ninth hole on the Mountain Course at Silverstone Golf Course.

Coronado freshman Melanie Chambers and Silverado junior Tameka Demps each double-bogeyed the treacherous finishing hole in the Sunrise Region girls golf tournament Tuesday, setting up a potential sudden-death playoff today. Each player shot 79.

Play was suspended because of darkness and will resume at 7 a.m. with five groups still on the course. Among the players was Basic’s Megan Scharf, who was at 56 through 12 holes and would need to shoot under par over the final six holes to top Chambers and Demps.

If no one could beat a 79, Chambers and Demps would go to a playoff at about 9 a.m.

“It’s OK,” Chambers said. “I would rather have an in-person playoff than a scorecard playoff.”

On the final hole, Chambers found the water, which runs down the left side from tee to green. After reaching the green in five, Chambers then missed a short bogey putt.

“If I made it, I wouldn’t have to come back,” she said.

Demps had a similar experience. After shooting 43 on the Valley Course, she birdied the first two holes of the Mountain Course and parred the next six. But on the ninth, she put her third shot in the water and two-putted.

“I’m just glad I finished (my round) because it was going so good today,” Demps said.

Coronado and Silverado were tied at 254, and Green Valley was at 265. Each team had three golfers who finished.
