November 6, 2013 - 12:28 am
Jose Morales scored on a penalty kick with three minutes left in the match Tuesday as Chaparral’s boys soccer team stunned Sunset League champion Western, 1-0 in the Division I-A Sunrise Region quarterfinals at Faith Lutheran.
Western (12-3-3) controlled possession and outshot the Cowboys (9-6-1), but a foul in the 18-yard box gave Chaparral the chance to win it.
“Every team has kind of that Michael Jordan-esque-type player,” Chaparral coach Eric Rolwing said. He’s (Morales) our guy. There was no question who was taking that shot.”
Morales fired the penalty kick low to the right post, beating Western goalkeeper Manuel Guillermo, who had four penalty kick saves and eleven shutouts going into the match.
“I just needed to relax, and take my time,” Morales said.
Chaparral will face Tech (16-5-3) at 4 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Park.
“We’ve lost more one-goal games than anyone else in the state,” Rolwing said. “To get this win is very satisfying.”
Sunrise Mountain 1, Clark 0 — At Faith Lutheran, Luis Olandez scored with 13 minutes left in the match as the Miners (9-4-2) stunned the Chargers (13-3-5).
Olandez received Luis Cortez’s throw-in, spun around, and fired a low shot just inside the right post from 15 yards out.
Olandez left the field in celebration, receiving his second yellow card.
Carlos Cruz recorded the shutout for the Miners, who will face Desert Pines (12-0-3) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Park.
Tech 5, Faith Lutheran 1 — Derian Salcido scored twice in first 20 minutes of the first half, and the Crusaders could never recover.
Faith Lutheran (15-6-5) broke through early in the second half when Tristan Tomburo hit Chase Pavlov on a corner kick, and Pavlov punched it in to split Tech’s lead in half, 2-1.
But Tech wasn’t done. Julio Del Real scored twice in a three-minute span to push the lead to 4-1.
Brandon Vargas closed out the scoring for Tech.
“We’re just playing better soccer,” Roadrunners coach Josh Jones said. “We’ve struggled to find the back of the net. Tonight, we found it.”
Desert Pines 3, Mojave 0 — The Jaguars scored three second-half goals to remain unbeaten and eliminate the Rattlers.
The barrrage began with a 30-footer from Rodrigo Andrade nine minutes into the second half. Less than two minutes later, Diego Sanchez followed suit with an unassisted goal. Four minutes later, Marco Vivero sailed a 25-footer through the upper left corner.
Mojave (9-7-2) struggled to muster offensive opportunities, the best of which came early in the second half when an Eduardo Luna shot careened off the crossbar.
