Legacy, Faith Lutheran play to scoreless draw

Updated October 3, 2017 - 9:50 pm

Jorge Cobian walked to the bench, put on a hat and zipped up his lightweight jacket before taking a deep breath at the sound of the head referee’s final whistle Tuesday night.

The fourth-year Legacy boys soccer coach knew his team should’ve walked away with a victory at Faith Lutheran.

But 80 minutes of scoreless competition is just sometimes how it goes in soccer.

And Cobian will take that draw in the tough Class 4A Northwest League.

“Today was a hell of a game,” Cobian said. “I loved how (my players) played. I know we could’ve won. We had more chances, but that’s the way it goes. We got a point out of it, which is great, because we’re visiting. So that’s a great thing. Hopefully it keeps us up there (in the standings).”

Legacy (5-6-1, 3-2-1 Northwest), coming off two consecutive league wins, was the aggressor from the opening kick. The Longhorns controlled possession, particularly in the first half, and finished with an 11-8 shot advantage.

But when the scoreboard sounded, they had to settle for the draw.

“It wasn’t a bad result,” Faith Lutheran coach Kevin Argue said. “I thought in the first half, we did not play well. We lacked the energy. … We really were slow in the first half, but we played very, very well in the second and probably should’ve gotten a result from it.”

Faith Lutheran (10-5-3, 2-3-1) took only two shot attempts in the first half, with the first coming in the 35th minute. But the Crusaders still had a chance late and narrowly missed on a few golden opportunities in the second half.

Senior midfielder Terrence Thibedi fought through a pair of defenders in the 53rd minute and had a one-on-one with Legacy goalkeeper Oliver Garcia, who made a diving save to keep it scoreless.

Garcia also blocked a shot over the crossbar in the 58th minute and rejected a free kick attempt minutes later to finish with three saves — all coming in the second half.

“Oliver has been with me for a couple of years,” Cobian said. “After an injury to our goalie last year, he kind of picked up his game. And he’s been playing club.”

Legacy’s Randy Anderson and Miguel Zavala each took a shot in the final minutes, but both of their shot attempts sailed over the crossbar.

Goalkeeper Landon Amick recorded the shutout with two saves for Faith Lutheran.
