It’s never good to be in a must-win situation.
It’s even worse when the must-win is against a two-time defending Southern Nevada champion.
But Arbor View’s girls soccer team faced one Wednesday to keep alive its Northwest League title hopes. Only a few shots on goal later, the Aggies edged Centennial 1-0 to complete a sweep of the Bulldogs.
“Any time you beat a team like (Centennial), it says something,” Aggies coach Jay Howard said. “It says where your program’s at and where it’s headed.
“It was a hard-fought, different atmosphere, but we fought through it. I’m proud of them.”
Fallon Miller scored the only goal of the match on an assist by Dakota Olson in the 17th minute.
“I didn’t get to play last time, so I was a little nervous (today),” Miller said. “But I came out there to do my thing, scored one goal, and I feel pretty good.”
Alex Luevano-Hardin made five saves to earn the shutout.
“We had a little bit of problem with (a slow start) with Palo, too, just not starting the way we finish,” Howard said. “I don’t get on them very often, but we did at halftime.”
The win puts Arbor View (8-1-1, 7-1 Northwest) alone in second place in the league, one game behind Palo Verde (10-0-1, 8-0).
“We really are trying to be consistent, and we’re trying to approach every game like it’s a must-win game,” Howard said. “We put ourselves in a good position, so today’s game didn’t make or break the season, but it sure was nice to win.”
The Bulldogs dropped to 5-3 in league play, with a second game against the Panthers still looming.
“It was a huge win for us,” Miller said. “It pretty much was getting ready to place us for the playoffs.”
