SUNRISE SOCCER: Ahlin helps Skyhawks avoid overtime to advance

With time winding down and the score tied 2-2 Monday, Silverado girls soccer coach Jenna Carter pulled out the rules to make sure she was clear on overtime procedures.

Senior midfielder Mikayla Ahlin made sure Carter didn’t need her rule book.

Ahlin took a pass from Cassidy Pappas and hit a right-footed shot inside the near post with about a minute to play to give the Skyhawks a 3-2 win over Foothill in the Sunrise Region quarterfinals at Heritage Park.

“Mikayla’s one of our seniors that didn’t want her season to end and definitely put the work in there when it mattered,” Carter said.

Silverado (10-4-3) led 2-0 at the half, but Foothill (13-7-1) scored twice in the first eight minutes of the second half to tie the game.

“They definitely came out with some energy in that second half and had the wind with them,” Carter said of Foothill. “We came out a little flat and definitely let down a little bit after having the momentum that first half.”

Katherine Ballou’s shot from near the top of the penalty box ticked off the cross bar and went into the net a minute into the second half to make it 2-1.

Seven minutes later, Jillian Vigil’s shot from 20 yards out also nicked the crossbar and went in to tie the game.

“We weathered the storm and were able to get our feet back under us,” Carter said. “We kept fighting until that final whistle.”

Carter said it was important to try to win in regulation and avoid the sudden-death overtime.

“We knew we wanted to try to take care of it in regulation,” Carter said. “I told the girls with five minutes left, and they kept hammering at the goal, trying to finish.”

Senior Danielle Parven had both first-half goals for Silverado. She followed her own shot, putting home the rebound in the game’s sixth minute. Then in the 17th minute, Ahlin hit a cross from the right corner, and Parven ran onto the ball near the goal line to tap it in for a 2-0 lead.

“It’s kind of a testament to our seniors this season,” Carter said. “They step up when the pressure’s on and come through.”

Green Valley 5, Basic 0 — Alexis Kirson scored three goals as the Gators (13-2-5) routed the Wolves (3-13-1).

Jessica Messer added a goal on a 40-yard free kick, and Madison Holborrow also scored for the Gators, who dominated possession and had 23 shots, 14 of them on goal. Kiyana Lopez and Cassandra Palor combined on the shutout for Green Valley.

Basic’s best scoring opportunity came on a 20-yard free kick that sailed over the crossbar midway through the second half.

The defending region champion Gators play Silverado in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Eldorado 2, Las Vegas 0 — Jacquie Avila and Kimberly Olivares each had a goal as the Sundevils (14-3-2) eliminated the Wildcats (8-7-4).
