NOTES: Big men aplenty among valley’s top uncommitted seniors

The past few football recruiting cycles in Nevada have been headlined by big men.

Beginning with the class of 2012 that featured current NFL prospects Ronnie Stanley of Bishop Gorman and Jeremiah Poutasi of Desert Pines, and continuing last season with Tyrell Crosby of Green Valley (Oregon) and Nick Gates of Gorman (Nebraska), many of the state’s top recruits have been offensive linemen.

This season, the state’s No. 1 prospect — Gorman’s Alize Jones, a UCLA commit — is a tight end, but again there are several local prospects who ply their trade in the trenches.

Here’s a quick look at the top uncommitted seniors from the valley, based on rankings by Rivals.com and Scout.com:

Cordell Broadus, Gorman: The transfer from Diamond Bar (Calif.) and son of Snoop Dogg grew up playing in his father’s Snoop Youth Football League and is a consensus four-star prospect. The 6-foot-3-inch wide receiver favors UCLA at this point, according to Rivals, and has plenty of other schools involved, including Arizona State and Southern California.

Justin Polu, Silverado: The 6-4, 295-pound offensive lineman is a three-star prospect. According to Scout, he has scholarship offers from Air Force, Colorado State, Idaho and Navy, where his brother Jarvis signed a letter of intent in February.

Mark Anthony and Mark Gil Gacutan, Las Vegas: The twins plan to play together in college and have an offer from Weber State. Mark Anthony (6-6, 315) is rated higher by Rivals and Scout, but Mark Gil (6-5, 310) is a two-star prospect as well.

Jackson Perry, Gorman: The three-star prospect has been a force at defensive tackle for the Gaels and is projected as an offensive lineman by some college recruiters. Perry (6-3, 285) is hearing from Nebraska, Colorado State, Columbia, Harvard, Utah State and Yale.

Elias Miller, Las Vegas: The 6-1, 190-pound running back scored five touchdowns in the opener against Rancho, and the two-star prospect has offers from Brigham Young, UNLV and Weber State, according to Las Vegas coach James Thurman.

■ GAELS FALL TO NO. 3 — Bishop Gorman, which needed overtime to slip past Bingham (Utah) 23-20 on Friday, dropped to No. 3 in the latest USA Today Super 25 rankings.

The Gaels (3-0) were replaced at the top by St. John Bosco (Calif.), while St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) checked in at No. 2.

Gorman travels to Corona, Calif., this week to take on perennial state power Centennial (1-1). Should the Gaels survive that and their Sept. 19 home date against Santa Margarita (Calif.), their Sept. 26 home game against Bosco (2-0) on ESPNU could decide the mythical national championship.

■ RAIN ALTERS SCHEDULE — Several athletic events involving Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley were postponed this week because of the closure of Interstate 15 northeast of Las Vegas, the Clark County School District announced.

Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley were scheduled to compete in a Division I-A Sunrise League cross country meet today at Boulder City. That meet will be contested without the two schools.

All of Monday’s tennis schedule, two soccer matches, one golf match and one volleyball match were postponed because of rain. None of the postponed contests has been rescheduled.
