RECRUITING: Liberty’s Jefferson commits to Southern California

Liberty junior Noah Jefferson made a nonbinding oral commitment to Southern California on Thursday, Patriots football coach Rich Muraco said.

Jefferson originally announced his decision on Twitter, writing: “I am now committing to the University of Southern California, to God be the glory #fighton.”

The first day Jefferson can sign a letter of intent is Feb. 4, and USC’s coaches cannot comment until that time. He also had scholarship offers from Arizona State and San Diego State and was drawing interest from schools in the Pac-12, Southeastern and Big Ten conferences.

The 6-foot-6-inch, 280-pound Jefferson, who transferred from Desert Oasis before his junior year, was a standout tight end and defensive end for Liberty last season. He had 25 receptions for 462 yards and five touchdowns to go along with 36 tackles and two sacks.

Jefferson is a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and Scout.com. He earned the Most Valuable Player award for defensive linemen at the Rivals Northern California Camp in March and is expected play on the defensive line for the Trojans.

Jefferson’s father, William, was an offensive lineman for two seasons with the Cleveland Browns and played in the Canadian Football League. His older brother, Cameron, is a starting offensive lineman at UNLV.
