RECRUITING: Two Centennial football players commit

Two Centennial senior football players recently gave oral commitments to schools, another will walk on, and a fourth is drawing interest.

Wide receiver/linebacker Matt Holley said he has committed to Southern Utah, to which he is making an official visit that will end Sunday.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 200-pound Holley had received interest from Stanford and Brigham Young earlier in the season. He had 120 tackles and two interceptions this season, helping the Bulldogs finish 4-6.

Holley has been told he likely will play outside linebacker for the Thunderbirds.

He will be reunited with former Centennial teammate Tyson Turley, a sophomore safety for Southern Utah.

“(Turley) said it was a good place,” Holley said. “That was one of the main reasons I went there.”

Centennial coach George Baker said Holley’s combination of grades and football will serve him well at Southern Utah.

“He’s an overall committed kid,” Baker said. “He’s probably one of the most tenacious players I’ve had the privilege of coaching.”

Fullback/linebacker Scott Hamilton said he is headed to New Mexico Highlands, a Division II program in Las Vegas, N.M.

The 6-foot, 240-pound Hamilton said New Mexico Highlands originally recruited him as a fullback but now is looking at him as a linebacker after watching his highlight tape.

Hamilton had 81 tackles and two sacks this season. He also drew interest from Southern Utah, South Dakota and North Dakota.

“It’s a college town,” Hamilton said of Las Vegas, N.M. “All you can do there is school and football.”

Kicker/punter Colton Price will walk on to Southern Utah, Baker said. Price averaged 39.5 yards per punt this season with a long of 71 and landed nine inside the 20-yard line.

Two-way lineman Billy Smith said he has drawn interest from Lehigh, Holy Cross, Columbia and Division II Colorado School of Mines but has yet to receive an offer.
