With the game tied 12-all, Boulder City’s Jeanne Carmell hit a streaking Alexis Schraft down the left sideline for a 60-yard, catch-and-run touchdown to lift the Sunrise all-stars to an 18-12 victory.
Desert Oasis’ Andrue Aguilera, much to his own surprise, came off the bench to lead five double-figure scorers with 17 points in the Sunset Region’s 103-85 win over the Sunrise Region at Foothill High.
Centennial rising senior Jamaal Evans became the second area QB to make an oral commitment for 2017 when he recently pledged to UNR.
The Skyhawks seemingly contend for a state team title every five years, and Saturday was no different as they overcame injuries and wintry conditions to claim the championship at the Division I state track and field meet at Carson High.
The Panthers took control early, with both teams cruising to victories. It was the second consecutive state title for the girls and the fourth straight for the boys.
Nick Tapuala won the discus at the Division I state track and field meet with a mark of 178 feet, 9 inches despite unfavorable conditions at Carson High and became the third Liberty thrower to take home a state title in the event since 2011.
Abby Richter, a junior at Green Valley, contracted viral meningitis at age 11, and being out of the water for an extended period helped foster her affinity for the sport. Richter has since developed into one of the nation’s top swimmers and will compete Saturday at the Division I state swimming and diving meet at UNLV’s Buchanan Natatorium.
Green Valley defeated Foothill 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 to win the Division I state championship at Legacy. It was Green Valley’s first state title.
Sophomore Troy Bell finished with 32 digs to lead the Falcons to a 25-15, 19-25, 25-20, 25-17 win over Sunset Region champ Arbor View in the Division I state semifinals at Legacy.
It was mid-March when Coronado swimming coach David Stump got a phone call from senior Parker Evans.
Las Vegas High’s James took first in the 100-meter dash in 10.69 seconds and won the 200 in 21.66. He also ran a leg on two state-qualifying relay teams, as the Wildcats finished second in the 400 relay and third in the 800 relay.
The Wolves used a balanced attack on offense, a handful of defensive gems and the arm of sophomore C.J. Dornak to post a 6-0 victory over visiting Green Valley to claim the Division I Sunrise Region championship. The win locked up a berth in the state tournament, which begins on Thursday at Bishop Manogue.
Green Valley’s baseball team lost both games it played against Silverado during the regular season.
