The Mustangs allowed three home runs and dropped a 5-1 decision to Douglas on Friday in the losers bracket final of the Class 4A state softball tournament at Bishop Manogue High School.
Basic couldn’t complete a rally and fell to Douglas, while Shadow Ridge could not stave off Spanish Springs’ rally.
Shadow Ridge beat Palo Verde 3-2 in the early game at Bishop Gorman on Saturday, then took a 10-8 decision in the second game to win the Sunset Region softball team and clinch a spot in next week’s state tournament.
Both the boys and girls teams dominated for Palo Verde as they cruised to region titles.
Martin quieted Centennial’s bats over 5⅓ innings as the Mustangs advanced to the Sunset Region softball championship with a 7-5 victory.
Farries Gardner, a 6-foot-2-inch opposite hitter, had 17 kills — including three emphatic ones to end the game — and 10 digs to propel Centennial to a decisive 25-18, 25-15, 25-21 victory over defending Class 4Astate champion Palo Verde at host-site Arbor View.
Makall Whetten knocked a two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Panthers a 5-3 lead over Shadow Ridge. The Mustangs left the bases loaded in the seventh without scoring, and Palo Verde advanced to its ninth straight Sunset Region final.
Shadow Ridge cruised to an 11-3 home win over Faith Lutheran in the Sunset Region softball tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
