I-A BOYS SOCCER: Roadrunners set tone early, punch ticket to state

Tech’s boys soccer team struggled this season, needing to win its last two regular season matches just to qualify for the playoffs.

Despite those early struggles, the Roadrunners punched a ticket to the Division I-A state tournament with a 2-1 victory over Sunrise Mountain in the Southern Region semifinals Thursday at Bettye Wilson Park.

Clark boys soccer coach Juan Chavez said his team’s good fortune this season started when senior Ivan Lopez became a leader.

The Chargers’ good fortune on Tuesday came largely because of Lopez.

Whittnee Nihipali had 15 kills, 13 digs and two aces Thursday to help Shadow Ridge’s girls volleyball team clinch its second consecutive Southwest League title with a 28-26, 26-24, 25-23 sweep of visiting Bishop Gorman.

GIRLS SOCCER: Orellana, Roadrunners rally to tie Desert Pines

Katy Orellana scored the tying goal with 20 minutes left in the match Wednesday to help Tech’s girls soccer team rally from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 tie with Desert Pines at Heritage Park.

VOLLEYBALL: Cougars sweep Foothill, wrap up Southeast title

Cali Thompson had 39 assists, six aces, two kills and seven digs, and Carolyn Andrulis added 11 kills and nine digs Tuesday to help Coronado’s girls volleyball team win the Southeast League title with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-14 win over visiting Foothill.
