Desert Pines capped the Division I-A state track and field meet in style Saturday at chilly Carson High, lowering its own meet record in the 1,600 relay on the way to the school’s first team title.
Desert Pines’ Amari Calvillo-Tatum topped teammate Artis McCoy in the boys 200- and 400-meter runs to help the Jaguars surge into first place after the opening day of the Division I-A state meet.
Boulder City’s boys made it somewhat interesting by scoring 110 points to defeat second-place Sierra Vista by 25 points. But the girls dominated throughout, scoring 156 points to easily get past second-place Truckee, which finished with 111 points. It was the sixth consecutive championship for the Eagles’ boys and the fourth straight for the girls.
Faith Lutheran’s Charlie Magruder withstood a late push from Pahrump Valley’s Austen Ancell and finished the tournament at 2-under-par 142 Wednesday to win his second Division I-A state championship at Mountain Falls.

Mandy Gebhart, Montana Lloyd and Rose Pouch each placed first in two individual events, and Boulder City won seven of the eight individual swimming events Friday to run away with the Division I-A Southern Region girls swimming title at UNLV.
Four Crusaders improved on their first-round scores — and five shot in the 70s — as Faith Lutheran finished with a team score of 769 and ran away with the Division I-A Southern Region title by 77 strokes over Pahrump Valley at Siena Golf Club.
