CHARGER INVITE: Wildcats survive endurance test, capture Black Division title

Las Vegas High softball coach Kelly Lindahl entered the week hoping to just make it through five games in the span of 30 hours.

The Wildcats have only 11 players on their roster, leaving little wiggle room for injuries or illness.

Four wins and a rather large trophy later, the Wildcats proved they could more than just survive.

Fueled again by senior pitcher Kristina Nelson, Las Vegas blanked Mater Dei Catholic (Calif.) 3-0 in six innings Tuesday in the Black Division championship of the Charger Invitational at Big League Dreams Sports Park.

“They really relied on each other,” Lindahl said. “They stayed together as a team.”

Nelson tossed a four-hitter in the title game. She struck out eight and didn’t allow a walk. Only one Crusader reached third base safely.

Nelson also tossed a complete game in the Wildcats’ 6-4 five-inning win over Brawley Union (Calif.) earlier Tuesday. She made one start and two relief appearances – including one in which she struck out all nine batters she faced — on Monday.

Against the Crusaders, Nelson kept hitters off-balance by throwing both a front-door and back-door curveball and a screwball.

“She worked really, really hard today,” Lindahl said.

Brooke Booth’s RBI double and a two-run, ground-rule double by Melody Sapin in the top of the first inning was all the offense Las Vegas needed.

Sapin and Nelson each went 2-for-2, and Sam Taylor was 2-for-4 for Las Vegas, which went 4-1 in the tournament and got a confidence boost prior to Northeast League play, which begins next week.

“This is really going to lead into our league season,” Lindahl said. “The girls will take it and run with it.”

Spring Valley 5, Wilsonville (Ore.) 3 — DeLio was 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBIs, and Ellie Endsley went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to help the Grizzlies top the Wildcats.
