I-A SOFTBALL: Masterson’s one-hitter lifts Eagles over Desert Shields

Charlene Masterson spun a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts Tuesday as host Boulder City’s softball team opened play in the Division I-A Southern Region Tournament with a 3-1 win over Cheyenne.

The Eagles (24-8) scored an unearned run in the first inning, and Bryanna Lopez and Jessica Embro each supplied an RBI single in the third inning to build a 3-0 lead.

Alexis Gojkovich had Cheyenne’s only hit in the fifth inning, and Italy Mora scored an unearned run for the Desert Shields (16-14) in the seventh.

Boulder City will host Faith Lutheran (27-8) in a winners’ bracket semifinal at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Cheyenne will visit Moapa Valley (11-9) in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Faith Lutheran 7, Moapa Valley 3 — At Faith Lutheran, winning pitcher Makena Martin went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Crusaders by the Pirates.

Martin tossed a five-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk for Faith Lutheran. Samantha Jack was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Claire Peck went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Crusaders.

DaniElle Russo was 2-for-3 with a double for Moapa Valley, which scored all three of its run in the top of the seventh inning.

Spring Valley 10, Sunrise Mountain 0 — At Sunrise Mountain, Michaela Hood tossed a one-hitter and struck out 13 as the Grizzlies (18-7) rolled by the Miners (14-9).

Michaela Hood and Madison Hood each went 3-for-4 with a double, and Ellie Endsley was 2-for-4 for Spring Valley, which will visit Sierra Vista (15-7) in a winners’ bracket semifinal at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Sierra Vista 14, Chaparral 0 — At Sierra Vista, Kalei Watkins came within one-out of a five-inning perfect game as the Mountain Lions routed the Cowboys (13-15).

Watkins settled for a one-hitter and struck out 14. She also had a triple, a double, three runs and two RBIs for Sierra Vista.

Adrianna Somerville went 4-for-4 with a double, and Harmony Dominguez was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs for the Mountain Lions.

Sara Living, who had a two-out single in the fifth inning, was the only base runner for Chaparral, which visits Sunrise Mountain in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
