Small schools: Bailey Bennett-Jordan pitches Boulder City past Lowry

Bailey Bennett-Jordan tossed an eight-hit shutout and struck out five Thursday to help Boulder City’s softball team to a 5-0 win over Lowry in the opening round of the Class 3A state softball tournament at Reno High.

Bennett-Jordan got all the support she needed in the bottom of the first inning when Ashley Wishard’s RBI groundout plated Ryann Reese with the game’s first run. Marleena Mills added an RBI single with two outs in the first.

The Eagles (25-9) tacked on three more runs in the third and will meet Churchill County (25-9) at 2:30 p.m. Friday with the winner moving on to Saturday’s title game.

Ellie Ramsey was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Jordan Moorhead was 2-for-3 for Boulder City.

Sydney Connors went 2-for-4 for the Buckaroos (24-9), who will meet Pahrump Valley (26-11) in an elimination game at noon Friday. The winner of that game will play again at 5 p.m. for the right to advance to the title game.

Churchill County 12, Pahrump Valley 2 — At Reno, the Trojans grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Greenwave rallied to win in five innings.

Taylor Egan’s two-run home run in the top of the first inning gave Pahrump the lead. Egan also had a double and finished 3-for-3.

Churchill County scored once in the second, three times in the third, twice in the fourth and ended the game with a six-run fifth inning.

Jordan Beyer was 2-for-2 with two home runs and four RBIs, and Stacy Kalt was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs for Churchill County. Shelbi Schultz went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs for the Greenwave.

Class 2A

The opening round of the Class 2A state tournament started well for Laughlin.

The end wasn’t as kind.

After scoring twice in the top of the first inning, the Cougars fell to White Pine, 13-3 in five innings at Reed High in Sparks.

White Pine scored twice in the bottom of the first, took the lead with a run in the second and kept scoring. The Bobcats used a seven-run fifth to end the game via the run rule.

Britney Kingston tossed a four-hitter with five strikeouts and was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs for White Pine (25-11-1), which will meet Pershing County (27-4) at 2:30 p.m. Friday for the right to advance to Saturday’s championship.

Mia Kemmler was 2-for-4 with two doubles, and Eva Kingston was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Bobcats.

Sammi Sarinana went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Laughlin (14-10-1), which will meet Needles (20-8) in an elimination game at noon Friday. The winner of that game will play again at 5 p.m. Friday for the right to advance to the title game.

Pershing County 5, Needles 1 — At Reed, the Mustangs won the day’s opening game.

Riley Breaux drove in Charlie Andrews with Needles’ only run.

Class 1A

Madalyn Taylor went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs to help Pahranagat Valley erase an early two-run deficit and rout Coleville 13-3 in five innings in the opening round of the Class 1A state tournament at North Valleys.

Jessica Brede was 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs for the Panthers (20-6), who will face Wells (21-2) in the winners’ bracket final at noon Friday.

Karley Whipple was 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, and Morgan Harris went 2-for-2 with a double and four runs for the Panthers. Winning pitcher Kaitlyn Davis went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Pahranagat Valley scored twice in the bottom of the first to wipe out a 2-0 deficit, then took the lead with a four-run second inning and tacked on four more in the third.

Summer Collins and Morningstar Lent each went 2-for-3 with a double for Coleville (17-6), which will face Indian Springs (15-8) in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Wells 14, Indian Springs 7 — At North Valleys, the Thunderbirds scored four times in the top of the first inning, but the Leopards erupted for seven in the third and five in the fourth to rally for the victory in Thursday’s second game.

Winning pitcher Sam Shamblin tossed a four-hitter and went 2-for-5 with a home run, a triple and three RBIs for Wells. Keegan Laughlin was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Laila Jackson was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs for the Leopards.

Aspen Avery was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Indian Springs.
