Small schools: Monster third inning powers Pahrump to region final

Pahrump Valley’s softball team used a 13-run second inning to storm past Moapa Valley, 15-6 on Friday at Boulder City.

The win secured the Trojans (27-9) a place in the Class 3A Southern Region final, where they will face host Boulder City (23-9) at noon. Pahrump Valley will need to win twice to secure the region crown,

Both Pahrump Valley and Boulder City have qualified for the state tournament.

Pahrump Valley 10, Mojave 3 — At Boulder City, the Trojans beat the Rattlers in a losers’ bracket semifinal.

Mojave finished the year 12-9

Class 2A

Needles 17, Lake Mead 2 — At Needles, California, Charley Andrews went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three runs as the Mustangs advanced to the championship game with a four-inning win over the Eagles.

Brooklyn McCorkle went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs, and Kandice Summers was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Needles.

Winning pitcher Jaycee Fragoso homered and drove in three runs for the Mustangs (19-7), who will face Laughlin (14-8-1) in the title game at 10 a.m. Saturday. Laughlin must win twice to win the crown. Both teams advance to next week’s state tournament.

Josey White was 1-for-2 with a solo home run for Lake Mead.

Laughlin 9, Lake Mead 6 — At Needles, California, the Cougars used a five-run sixth inning on just two hits to rally past the Eagles in the losers’ bracket final.

Jasmine Donnett went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Ashley Bishop was 2-for-4 with two runs for Laughlin, which took advantage of 10 Lake Mead errors.

Josey White was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, three runs and two RBIs, and Lauryn Freund went 3-for-5 with a solo home run for Lake Mead. Jillian Morejon was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Emma Thomason was 2-for-3 for the Eagles (11-11).

Laughlin 10, Lincoln County 8 — At Needles, California, the Cougars edged the Lynx.

The Lynx finished the season 17-14.

Class 1A

Pahranagat Valley 18, Indian Springs 3 — At Alamo, Karley Whipple went 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles and six RBIs to send the Panthers into the championship game of the Class 1A Southern League tournament after beating the Thunderbirds in three innings.

Madalyn Taylor’s three-run triple in the bottom of the third inning ended the game on the run rule. Taylor finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs for the Panthers (18-6).

Pahranagat Valley will meet Indian Springs (15-6) again at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Thunderbirds would need to win twice Saturday to win the title. Both teams will advance to next week’s state tournament.

Aspen Avery went 1-for-1 with a triple, a run and an RBI for Indian Springs.

Indian Springs 14, Tonopah 8 — At Alamo, Destiny Maloney went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs as the Thunderbirds outlasted the Muckers in the losers’ bracket final.

Faith Prine was 1-for-4 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs for Indian Springs, which drew 13 walks — five of those by winning pitcher Aspen Avery.

Avery allowed just four hits and struck out 14, but walked 12 and threw 184 pitches.

Cindy Miramontez was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Tonopah (12-11).

Tonopah 10, Beaver Dam 2 — At Alamo, Skyla Ogilve went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and an RBI to lead the Muckers by the Diamondbacks in the day’s first elimination game.

Lauren Klapper was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs, and Abby Ponce went 1-for-2 with a double and three RBIs for Tonopah.

Blaze Snegirev tossed a four-hitter and struck out 10 for the Muckers.

Yesenia Ortega was 1-for-2 with a triple and a run for Beaver Dam (8-14).
