SOFTBALL: Shelbi Denman, Shadow Ridge start fast at Tournament of Champions

Shelbi Denman spun a one-hit shutout and stuck out eight Thursday as Shadow Ridge’s softball team blanked Bingham (Utah) 13-0 in four innings in the Tournament of Champions at Bullhead City, Arizona.

Alyssa Stanley hit a two-run homer and drove in four runs to lead the Mustangs at the plate. Shea Clements hit a solo home run and had three RBIs.

Jasmine Martin and Caitlyn Covington each doubled for Shadow Ridge, which plated eight runs in the top of the first inning.

Shadow Ridge 9, Lakewood (Calif.) 5 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Martin went 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBIs, and Alisha Schultz was 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs to lead the Mustangs past the Lancers at the Tournament of Champions.

Clements went 3-for-4 for Shadow Ridge, which led 7-1 after two innings.

Coronado 7, O’Connor (Ariz.) 0 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Jillian James fired a five-inning shutout and went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Cougars over the Eagles, ranked No. 17 in the nation by MaxPreps.com, at the Tournament of Champions.

James allowed two hits and struck out 11.

Sophia McCann went 2-for-2 with two solo homers, and Tatum Spangler also homered for Coronado.

Ashley Ward was 2-for-3 with a double, and Alexis Okamura also had a double for the Cougars.

Pacifica (Calif.) 3, Coronado 0 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Hannah Boos fired a two-hitter to lead the Mariners over the Cougars in six innings at the Tournament of Champions.

Boos struck out eight with one walk.

Spangler allowed two hits in five innings for Coronado. Spangler struck out five, but allowed three unearned runs in the fourth to take the loss.

Taylorsville (Utah) 10, Foothill 9 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Kylie Becker had one of the Falcons’ two hits, scored twice and had an RBI in a loss to the Warriors at the Tournament of Champions.

Katelyn Enzweiler went 1-for-2 with an RBI and three stolen bases for Foothill, which rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Leah Becker also drove in a run for the Falcons.

Cactus (Ariz.) 9, Foothill 8 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Enzweiler went 3-for-3 with three doubles, and Skylar Glaude was 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the Falcons’ loss to the Cobras at the Tournament of Champions.

Haleigh Olive went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run for Foothill, which scored six runs in the sixth inning after trailing 9-2.

Centennial 14, Copper Hills (Utah) 1 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Jaden Tate was 2-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs to power the Bulldogs past the Grizzlies in a five-inning game at the Tournament of Champions.

Makenzie Ball went 3-for-4 with a homer and five RBIs, and Cassidy Lada added a three-run homer for Centennial, which pulled away with an eight-run fifth inning.

Kiana Tate went 2-for-3 for Centennial.

Amanda Sink went the distance, allowing an unearned run on one hit, to get the win. She struck out 10 with three walks.

Orange Lutheran (Calif.) 3, Centennial 1 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, the Lancers scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to knock off the Bulldogs in the Tournament of Champions.

Centennial freshman Maddie Kallfelz had given the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth.

But Orange Lutheran, ranked No. 4 in the nation by MaxPreps.com, took the lead in the sixth highlighted by a two-run homer by Noel Hee.

Maddy Dwyer struck out 11 and threw a three-hitter to get the win.

Centennial starter Deanna Barrera allowed a run on four hits in five innings. Barrera struck out three with one walk.

O’Connor (Ariz.) 10, Palo Verde 7 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Makena Martin went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, but the Panthers gave up nine runs in the sixth inning and lost to the Eagles at the Tournament of Champions.

Lauryn Barker was 2-for-4 with a triple and a home run, and Ally Snelling went 2-for-4 with a double and a homer for Palo Verde. Teammate Makall Whetten also homered.

Cienega (Ariz.) 8, Palo Verde 4 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Whetten homered, and Camden Zahn went 2-for-3 in the Panthers’ four-inning loss to the Bobcats at the Tournament of Champions.

Cienega scored four times in the top of the fourth inning to break a 4-4 tie.

Boulder City 2, Coachella Valley (Calif.) 0 — At Needles, California, Bailey Bennett-Jordan fired a two-hit shutout and went 2-for-2 with a solo home run to help the Eagles to a five-inning victory over the Arabs at the Colorado River Invitational.

Bennett-Jordan struck out six and walked one.

Jordan Moorhead and Ellie Ramsey each went 1-for-2 for Boulder City.

Boulder City 16, Legacy 3 — At Needles, California, Bennett-Jordan went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and five RBIs in the Eagles’ victory over the Longhorns at the Colorado River Invitational.

Jerra Hinson finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs, and Ryan Reese went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Boulder City.

Moorhead added two hits for the Eagles.

Legacy 8, White Pine 2 — At Needles, California, Kiani Ting was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, four RBIs and three runs to power the Longhorns over the Bobcats in three innings at the Colorado River Invitational.

Braelin Brockway went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run for Legacy. Haley Pedersen got the win in relief for the Longhorns.

Faith Lutheran 15, Cathedral City (Calif.) 0 — At Needles, California, Sophie Foster threw a one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts, and Haley Hines had four RBIs in the Crusaders’ five-inning win over the Lions at the Colorado River Invitational.

Ellie Fried drove in three runs, and Ryleigh Gilchrist had two hits and two RBIs for Faith Lutheran.

Faith Lutheran 7, Pahrump Valley 5 — At Needles, California, Gilchrist had three RBIs, and the Crusaders rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Trojans in five innings at the Colorado River Invitational.

Maggie Whipple drove in two runs for Faith Lutheran, which scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to break a 5-5 tie.

Jordan Egan drove in three runs as part of Pahrump Valley’s five-run first inning.

Durango 3, Chino Valley (Ariz.) 1 — At Needles, California, Trinity Valentine tossed four solid innings with eight strikeouts and one walk, as the Trailblazers edged the Cougars at the Colorado River Invitational.

Kaitlin Fazendin supplied a hit and a run for Durango.

Durango 7, Legacy 2 — At Needles, California, Valentine was 2-for-2 and threw three shutout innings to lead the Trailblazers past the Longhorns in the Colorado River Invitational.

Valentine struck out four with one walk.

Alexis Geraldo hit a two-run homer for Durango.

Desert Oasis 7, Needles 3 — At Needles, California, Paisley Garcia struck out five in four innings as the Diamondbacks topped the Mustangs in the Colorado River Invitational.

Garcia and Meaghan McInerney each had an RBI for the Diamondbacks.

Desert Oasis 13, Silverado 3 — At Needles, California, Meagan Anderrs was 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and four RBIs to lead the Diamondbacks over the Skyhawks in three innings at the Colorado River Invitational.

Elsy Guzman and Jalyn Chao each went 2-for-3 for Desert Oasis. Guzman drove in two runs and picked up the victory.

Mary Dungey had a three-run home run for Silverado.

Silverado 9, Palo Verde Valley 4 — At Needles, California, the Skyhawks topped the Yellowjackets in the Colorado River Invitational.

Arbor View 6, Woods Cross (Utah) 1 — At Doc Romeo, Bryce Henricksen went 2-for-3 with a home run, and the Aggies defeated the Wildcats in five innings at the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Breanne Henricksen allowed two hits and one run in five innings and struck out four to earn the victory.

Alyssa Trujillo added a double for Arbor View.

Arbor View 3, Oaks Christian (Calif.) 3 — At Doc Romeo Park, Taylor Beaman’s two-run single to right tied the game in the sixth inning for the Aggies as they tied the Lions in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Taylor Thomas scattered 10 hits over six innings, and Makenzie Gillan had a double for Arbor View.

Rancho 1, Farmington (N.M.) 0 — At Doc Romeo Park, Sam Pochop struck out 10 in a four-hit shutout to lead the Rams over the Scorpions in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Gianna Carosone had a walk, a stolen base and scored the game’s only run for Rancho.

Rancho 5, Salpointe Catholic (Ariz.) 0 — At Doc Romeo Park, Pochop spun a two-hit shutout with 16 strikeouts to lead the Rams over the Lancers in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Pochop also went 1-for-2 with a solo homer.

Damonte Ranch 5, Bishop Gorman 2 — At Gorman, Mallory Greenwood went 2-for-2 with a double for the Gaels, but they fell to the Mustangs in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Monique Passalacqua, Reyna Martin and Gia Pergolini each doubled for the Gaels.

Clovis (Calif.) 18, Bishop Gorman 2 — At Gorman, the Gaels surrendered 12 runs in the first inning and fell to the Cougars in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Liberty 15, Las Vegas 4 — At Las Vegas, Cali Christopher was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs, and the Patriots used a 10-run sixth inning to defeat the Wildcats in a Class 4A Sunrise League game.

Breanna Alvarez went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs for Liberty, which got two hits, two RBIs and three runs from Morgan LaNeve.

Soraya Seumalo tossed four solid innings to get the win, and Alvarez threw two scoreless innings for the Patriots.

Skylar Gorrell belted a three-run home run in the first inning to lead Las Vegas.

Chaparral 24, Agassi Prep 9 — At Chaparral, Oleydis Claro hit an inside-the-park home run, one of just five hits for the Cowboys, in their win over the Stars.

Brandi Vara doubled for the Cowboys, who drew 12 walks in the first inning.

Losi Brown entered the game in relief for Chaparral and struck out all seven batters she faced.

Pahranagat Valley 13, Virgin Valley 2 — At Mesquite, Madison Harris and Kyla Shumway each had two RBIs, and the Panthers routed the Bulldogs at the Sherm Bennett Memorial Tournament.

Pahranagat Valley trailed 2-1 after two innings but scored 12 runs in third inning.

Savannah Price had a triple for Virgin Valley.

Spring Creek 9, Moapa Valley 2 — At Mesquite, the Spartans defeated the Pirates at the Sherm Bennett Memorial Tournament.

Lincoln County 17, Valley 4 — At Mesquite, the Lynx defeated the Vikings at the Sherm Bennett Memorial Tournament.
