Spring Jamboree: Shadow Ridge jumps all over California opponent to take 7th place

It took all of three pitches for Shadow Ridge’s softball team to show it meant business. Single, single, walk, and the Mustangs weren’t done.

Shadow Ridge scored five runs in the first inning of the seventh-place game of the Spring Jamboree on Saturday and coasted to an 8-2 victory over El Camino Real (California).

“It’s setting the tone for the rest of the game, as far as we can tell,” Shadow Ridge coach Julia Meyn said.

The first five hitters reached in the first for the Mustangs, punctuated by an RBI double from Raelyn Kendall. She scored on a single by Angelina Esqueda to complete the scoring, and it was 5-0 before El Camino Real could catch its breath.

Shea Clements was the spark plug for Shadow Ridge. She singled on the game’s first pitch and finished 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI.

“I definitely like going after the first pitch,” Clements said. “It gets myself ahead of the game and makes the pitcher more intimidated.”

Jazmine Martin took a shutout into the sixth inning before allowing back-to-back home runs. She struck out three and allowed seven hits before being lifted in the sixth with nobody out.

Shadow Ridge finished as the top local team in the tournament for the second straight year, after taking third in 2017. The three-day event included Palo Verde, Centennial, Desert Oasis, Sierra Vista, Liberty and Pahrump Valley.

But Meyn wasn’t concerned with that. She said the experience of playing six games against top competition will aid the Mustangs as they enter the stretch run of Northwest League play.

“Experience is definitely the most important thing here,” Meyn said. “That’s what we’re trying to do out here.”

Redlands East Valley (Calif.) 4, Shadow Ridge 3 — Alisha Schultz was 2-for-3 with a double, but the Mustangs fell to the Wildcats in five innings.

Shadow Ridge led 3-1 going to the bottom of the third, but the Wildcats scored one in third and two in the fourth.

Kendall and Clements each tripled for the Mustangs.

Centennial 7, North Torrance (Calif.) 5 — Maddie Kallfelz had two home runs and three RBIs in the Bulldogs’ six-inning win against the Saxons.

It was the second time this tournament the Bulldogs beat North Torrance.

Ashlynn Heck and Seanna Simpson each doubled for Centennial.

Centennial 8, San Fernando (Calif.) 1 — Kiana Tate was 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two stolen bases to power the Bulldogs over the Tigers in six innings.

Natasha Lawrence and Samantha Lawrence each doubled for the Bulldogs, who scored in every inning.

Deanna Barrera pitched a three-hitter for Centennial.

Oaks Christian (Calif.) 4, Palo Verde 3 — Taylor Johnson’s three-run homer in the fifth was the game winner as the Lions tuned back the Panthers.

Palo Verde got all three runs in the third, thanks to four hits and a key throwing error by catcher Isabell Salinas.

Palo Verde 17, Valhalla (Calif.) 0 — Kendall Hopkins and Macall Whetten each belted grand slams in the four-inning win over the Noresmen.

The Panthers, who had 16 hits, scored in every inning. Sianna Lewis also homered for Palo Verde.

Liberty 10, San Pedro (Calif.) 0 — Cali Christopher was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Patriots to a five-inning win over the Pirates.

Maddison Hamilton was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for the Patriots, who scored four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Liberty’s Morgan LaNeve added a double and an RBI.

San Benito (Calif.) 18, Liberty 3 — LaNeve had a triple and an RBI, but the Patriots fell to the Haybalers in four innings.

McKenzie LaNeve had a double for Liberty.

Noel Chavarria and Kaiya Dickens each had a double and a homer for the Haybalers.

Sierra Vista 18, South Florence (S.C.) 3 — Mia Buranamontri was 4-for-4 with two home runs, seven RBIs and three runs as the Mountain Lions rolled over the Lady Bruins in four innings.

Daelynn Hilton was 3-for-3 with a homer, double, five RBIs and four runs for the Mountain Lions, and Aaliyah Medina doubled and had two RBIs.

Sierra Vista’s Jazmyn Martinez was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

South Torrance (Calif.) 8, Sierra Vista 0 — Medina doubled for the Mountain Lions in their six-inning loss to the Spartans.

Reagan Walsh homered twice for South Torrance, and Alyssa Podhurcak hit one home run.

Desert Oasis 17, San Diego (Calif.) 1 — Fia Tofi, Holly Severance and Izzy Hodson each homered in the Diamondbacks’ three-inning rout of the Cavers.

Desert Oasis quickly gained control, scoring 10 runs in the opening frame.

Paisley Garcia drove in four runs for the Diamondbacks, and Hodson and Tofi each added three RBIs.

San Pedro (Calif.) 7, Desert Oasis 5 — Severance homered for the Diamondbacks, but they fell to the Pirates in six innings.

Hodson and and Meaghan McInerney each doubled for the Diamondbacks, and teammate Maggie Shepard added two hits.

Winning pitcher Quincy Greenwood homered for San Pedro.

Pahrump Valley 11, Fernley 10 — The Trojans scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off against the Vaqueros.

Skyler Lauver, Jacquellen Stobbe and Taylor Egan each doubled for the Trojans, who won despite committing nine errors. Evandy Murphy and Terrana Martin each went 3-for-4 for Pahrump.

MacKenna Montgomery was 4-for-4 with a home run and a double for Fernley.

Lehi (Utah) 11, Pahrump Valley 4 — Lexi Butterfield homered and doubled to carry the Pioneers over the Trojans in six innings.

Amaya Mendoza doubled for the Trojans.

Lehi’s Kylie Woolf was 4-for-4 with a double.
