The Panthers took control early, with both teams cruising to victories. It was the second consecutive state title for the girls and the fourth straight for the boys.
Boulder City’s boys made it somewhat interesting by scoring 110 points to defeat second-place Sierra Vista by 25 points. But the girls dominated throughout, scoring 156 points to easily get past second-place Truckee, which finished with 111 points. It was the sixth consecutive championship for the Eagles’ boys and the fourth straight for the girls.
Abby Richter, a junior at Green Valley, contracted viral meningitis at age 11, and being out of the water for an extended period helped foster her affinity for the sport. Richter has since developed into one of the nation’s top swimmers and will compete Saturday at the Division I state swimming and diving meet at UNLV’s Buchanan Natatorium.
The college-bound quartet of Izzy Goldsmith, Hailey Houck, Adriana Piccininni and Kasdyn Rafie won the final race of the Division I Sunset Region boys and girls swimming and diving meet Saturday — a swimming curtain call — to cap off Palo Verde’s second straight girls team title.
It was mid-March when Coronado swimming coach David Stump got a phone call from senior Parker Evans.
Mandy Gebhart, Montana Lloyd and Rose Pouch each placed first in two individual events, and Boulder City won seven of the eight individual swimming events Friday to run away with the Division I-A Southern Region girls swimming title at UNLV.
Palo Verde’s Izzy Goldsmith, who’s been training with an eye on this summer’s Olympic Trials, will shift her focus to compete in the finals of the Division I Sunset Region girls swimming and diving meet starting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at UNLV’s Buchanan Natatorium.
Madelaine Lauger, Stephanie Platt and Allison Warnick each won one individual event and finished second in another Saturday to guide Palo Verde’s girls swimming team to a 201-92 victory over Centennial at Pavilion.
