DIVISION I-A BOYS: Singles help Chargers to first title in 33 years

Clarence Chun can't remember what he was doing 33 years ago.

He likely won't ever forget what he did Friday.

The eighth-year coach guided Clark's boys tennis team to its first state title since 1979 as the Chargers outlasted Truckee, 11-7 in the final at Reno Tennis Center.

"It's a great feeling," Chun said. "All the guys are elated. We're just glad we're able to represent Clark High School and the Southern Region.

"Thirty-three years is a long time. No way do I have any idea what I was doing then."

Deric Pang, Miko Pasimio and Joseph Maalouf made sure the title didn't elude the Chargers' grasp. The three each went 3-0 in singles.

Pang dropped only one game in his three sets. Pasimio lost just two games, and Maalouf surrendered only eight total games. All three came off the court quickly in each round.

"The singles played really hard," Chun said. "It helped us because it seemed like every round, we would get a slight lead. That made our players relax a little."

Kenny Daniels and Chaitanya Ingle went 2-1 in doubles for Clark (18-1), which won its state-record 10th team crown in boys tennis. Ironically, it came one year after two-time Class 4A state singles champion Kris Yee graduated.

"Our guys stuck together as a team and cheered for each other and helped each other," Chun said. "That's what team tennis is all about."

Aaron Pado and Grayson Forsberg went 3-0 in doubles to lead the Wolverines (10-3).
