I-A TENNIS: Doubles team exceeds expectations, leads Mustangs to title
The Meadows girls tennis coach Frideric Prandecki was hoping for two wins from his No. 2 doubles team Friday.
Olivia Waysack and Ava Frazier exceeded their coach's expectations.
The duo swept their three sets and won the clinching 10th point of the match early in the third round to help the Mustangs down Faith Lutheran, 12-6, in the Division I-A Southern Region final at Darling Tennis Center.
"We did not expect that," Prandecki said. "We were just hoping 2-1, and when they go 3-0, that makes things a lot easier for us. They played very well. They were focused."
Both teams will compete in the state tournament, which begins Oct. 22.
Waysack and Frazier dropped only six games in their three sets.
The Mustangs (11-1) also got a dominating effort from the No. 1 doubles unit of seniors Samantha Gondy and Shalini Shah, who went 3-0 and lost just five games.
"Our seniors going out there, being calm definitely sets the tone," Prandecki said.
No. 2 singles player Abbigail Klein went 3-0 for The Meadows, which led 4-2 after one round and 8-4 after two rounds. Anuja Daulat was 2-1 in singles for the Mustangs.
"Abbigail and Anuja, we can count on them to get at least two out of three," Prandecki said. "If one of them can go 3-0, it's a bonus."
Madison Foley went 2-1 in singles for the Crusaders (13-3), who won last year's region and state titles.
BOYS
Clark's run of dominance in Division I-A boys tennis isn't showing any signs of ending.
The Chargers captured their fourth straight Southern Region title and will try for their fourth straight state crown in two weeks after defeating The Meadows, 12-6.
"A lot of this is because of our senior captains," Clark coach Clarence Chun said. "They keep that tradition alive, and they believe in the program.
"I always get excited about winning, but this is really all about the team. I just sit back and watch."
No. 1 singles player Michael Pasimio went 3-0 and lost only two games on the day. Pasimio's third-round victory took just more than 10 minutes and gave the Chargers their clinching 10th point.
The doubles teams of Marcus Pasimio and Tea Tabor, and Christian Ong and Derek Stratton each went 2-0 for the Chargers (13-0), who had a comfortable 9-3 lead after two rounds.
"We have a good core that came back from last year, and we were fortunate to get some new players who have fit right in," Chun said.
Alex Lanzkowsky and Nate Van der Post each went 2-1 in singles, and Ryan Chang and Brian Capp were 2-1 in doubles for The Meadows (9-3).
