4A REGIONALS: Allgood holds off Blake for girls shot put title, Sunset record

Legacy’s Avione Allgood blew away the Sunset Region meet record in the shot put Friday at Del Sol.

And it was barely good enough to win the region title.

The Legacy junior produced a winning throw of 47 feet, 5 inches — three feet better than the region mark she set last year.

But it was only two inches better than Palo Verde freshman Ashlie Blake, who threw 47-3 and had to settle for second place.

“It was OK,” said Allgood, who is ranked number three in the nation, according to athletic.net. “She was pushing me. No one wants to get beat.”

Blake and Allgood combined for 11 throws that were longer than the previous record.

“I always throw good when we throw together; it’s just natural to want to throw further than one another,” Blake said. “But tonight was special for me. It was my PR. I’m narrowing the gap.”

Blake’s previous personal best was 45-0.

The one girls track event final, the 3,200-meter run, produced a mild upset as Sydney Badger of Centennial defeated Palo Verde freshman Katie Gorczyca, the top seed.

“I’ve been working on my finish,” said Badger, who defeated Gorczyca in the 1,600 at the Freshman-Sophomore championships but had never outpaced her in the 3,200. “Yeah, I was feeling confident.”

Badger and Gorczyca ran together and alone at the front for most of the race with Gorczyca maintaining a narrow lead. But the Centennial freshman took the lead for good with 200 meters to go and won going away in 11  minutes, 32.65 seconds. Gorczyca finished in 11:36.19.

In other Sunset girls finals on Friday, Cimarron-Memorial’s Kaycee Luke set a Sunset Region record with a mark of 10-6 in the pole vault, and Bonanza’s Bree Hammel won the triple jump with a leap of 37-7¼.

The Sunrise girls meet saw Green Valley’s Alyssa Rapovy win the 3,200 in 11:46.74.

Silverado’s Diamond Bond won the triple jump (35-7½), Las Vegas’ Natresha Bernard won the shot put (38-8), and Coronado’s Victoria Nounna-Koutainis won the pole vault (9-6).

In the Sunrise boys meet, Basic’s Quantavius Calvin set a region and stadium record in the long jump with a mark of 23-8¾

Also winning Sunrise boys events were Liberty’s Jordan Kapeli in the discus (145-6), Silverado’s Randall Cunningham in the high jump (6-4), and Foothill in the 3,200 relay (8:06.94).

In the Sunset boys meet, Western’s Kammeron Ringgold won the long jump (22-0¾), Centennial’s Jared Cody took the discus (142-1) and Bishop Gorman’s Demetris Morant won the high jump (6-3). Centennial won the 3,200 relay in 8:10.26.

Centennial took a strong lead in both the boys and girls Sunset meet through eight events. The Bulldogs have 69 points and a 28-point lead over Palo Verde on the girls side, and have 59 points and a 10-point margin over Arbor View in the boys title hunt.

Silverado leads both Sunrise meets. The Skyhawks have 65½ in the girls meet and 62 in the boys. Both region meets conclude Friday at Del Sol.
