REGIONALS: Foothill, Del Sol boys take 3,200 to a photo finish
May 5, 2010 - 4:12 pm
Two upsets and a dramatic finish in the Sunrise Region boys 3,200-meter relay final highlighted the opening day of the regional track and field preliminaries Wednesday at Del Sol.
Foothill and Del Sol, the Nos. 3 and 4 seeds, grabbed the two automatic qualifying spots to state by finishing 1-2 in a blanket finish. Foothill won in 8 minutes, 11.36 seconds, followed by Del Sol in 8:11.37.
Canyon Springs, the top seed, also qualified for state — thanks to a superb anchor leg by Jovani Hernandez, who brought his team from fifth place to third. Canyon Springs’ time of 8:16.42 was faster than Cimarron-Memorial’s third-place Sunset time of 8:25.98.
The Sunset race followed form, with Centennial and Arbor View finishing 1-2. Both teams qualified for state. Centennial’s time of 7:59.88 was a Sunset Region meet record, breaking the previous mark of 8:09.12 set by Cheyenne in 2006.
The outstanding individual male performance of the day was turned in by Green Valley’s Durrell McDonald, who won the Sunrise high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 9 inches. He broke the old regional record of 6-8 set by Terrence Ruffin of Chaparral in 2001.
The best girls performance was turned in by Legacy sophomore Avione Allgood, who set a record in the shot put. Her Sunset-winning throw of 44-5 shattered her regional and stadium record of 42-3¼ last year. The mark of 44-5 is ranked No. 26 in the nation, according to DyeStat.com.
Other noteworthy performances included the winning jump in the Sunset boys long jump. Dominic Jones of Cimarron-Memorial went 23-2½, the longest jump in Nevada this year. Krystal Onyema of Faith Lutheran won the Sunset girls triple jump with a mark of 37-3, the best in the state this season.
Karli Johonnot of Centennial began her quest for four individual titles by winning the Sunset girls pole vault and qualifying first in the 300 hurdles. On Friday, she goes for win No. 2 in the high jump and will attempt to qualify in the 100 hurdles. She’s the top seed in both events.
Outstanding distance performers among the girls were Lauren Lucas of Coronado and Ashley Lindgren of Pahrump Valley. Both won their 3,200 final — Lucas in Sunrise, Lindgren in Sunset — and both led all qualifiers in their respective 1,600 runs.
Other individual winners in the field events were Taylor Frampton of Green Valley, who won the Sunrise girls pole vault; Malcolm McMurray of Chaparral, winner of the Sunrise boys long jump; Adwoa Fosu, winner of the Sunrise girls triple jump; Brian Vignaud of Arbor View, who took the Sunset boys high jump; Paul Morton of Faith Lutheran, winner of the Sunset Region boys discus, and Allen Maddox of Green Valley, winner of the Sunrise boys discus.
Morton’s throw of 151-10 won the event by almost 10 feet.
The meet resumes Friday at Del Sol.
