Roundup: Coronado sweeps Bishop Gorman Invite titles

Justin Watterson won two individual events and ran on a winning relay team Saturday to lead Coronado’s boys track team to victory at the Bishop Gorman Invitational.

Watterson won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.16 seconds, and took the 300 hurdles in 38.71. He also ran on the winning 1,600 relay for the Cougars, who had 174 points.

Liberty was second with 129, and Arbor View was third with 84.

Coronado’s Elijah Hernandez won the 400 in 50.25, placed fourth in the 200 and ran on the winning 1,600 relay. Ashton Zaidi cleared 12 feet to win the pole vault for the Cougars.

Liberty’s Cervontes White also had three first-place finishes, winning the 100 (10.89), 200 (22.24) and running on the winning 800 relay team.

His teammate, Corey Moore, had a monster performance in the discus with a mark of 181-6 to win by more than 45 feet. He also took the shot put with a throw of 52-9.

David Elder won the triple jump (43-10½) and ran on the winning 800 relay team for the Patriots.

Gorman’s Massimiliano Swenson won the 1,600 (4:29.34) and 3,200 (10:06.03).

In the girls meet, Coronado dominated the hurdle events to finish first with 209.83 points. Arbor View (118) was second, and Liberty (112) third.

Emily Wickens won the 100 hurdles in 16.86 and was second in the 300 hurdles to lead the Cougars. Cayna Love won the 300 hurdles in 49.7 for Coronado, which took the top three spots in the event.

Erin Shannon won the 1,600 (5:40.55), Shay Mentley took the high jump (5-0) and Danielle Damiani won the pole vault (9-9) for Coronado, which also won the 3,200 relay.

Arbor View’s Ashia Martinez won the 100 (12.68) and ran on the winning 400 and 800 relay teams, and teammate Alina Oranchak took the 400 and ran on the winning 800 and 1,600 relays for the Aggies.

Liberty’s Briana McDaniel won the 200 (26.53) and long jump (16-10) and was second in the 100.

Gorman’s Emilia Puskas and Jill McPherson also each won two individual events. Puskas was first in the 800 (2:20.11) and 3,200 (12:19.44), and McPherson took the shot put (34-5) and discus (121-11) for the Gaels.

Centennial sweeps Heitkotter titles

Centennial’s Ashley Moore had four first-place finishes to lead the Bulldogs to the girls title at the Heitkotter Invitational at Faith Lutheran.

Moore won the 100 hurdles (15.15), the long jump (18-0), the triple jump (37-0) and ran on the winning 400 relay team for the Bulldogs, who had 176½ points.

Silverado was second with 86, and Green Valley placed third at 80½.

Centennial’s Kennedy Brace won the 400 (58.14), placed third in the 200 and ran on the winning 1,600 relay team.

Rancho’s Amir’a Edmond won the 100 (11.89) and 200 (25.52), and Basic’s Raquel Chavez-Velazquez took the 1,600 (5:54.32) and 3,200 (12:08.68).

Sunrise Mountain’s Kapua Pulotu swept the throws, taking the shot put with a mark of 38-7½ and the discus with a toss of 134-10.

Silverado’s Grace Cunningham won the high jump (5-9) and was second in the long jump.

On the boys side, Gerick Robinson won the 100 (11.26) and was fourth in the 200 and 400 to lead Centennial to victory with 147 points.

Faith Lutheran was second with 87, and Silverado was third with 84.

Davone Walden won the high jump (6-2), and Jordan McGilbra took the long jump (21-1) for the Bulldogs.

Valley’s Christian Franklin won the 800 (1:58.52) and 1,600 (4:30.64). Desert Pines’ Jamel Brown won the 110 hurdles (15.77), finished second in the 300 hurdles and ran on the winning 400 relay team.

Sierra Vista’s Edgar Molina was first in the 400 (50.17) and ran on the winning 1,600 relay team.
