Roundup: Gorman boys, girls sweep home meet

Bishop Gorman’s Samantha Nieves and Jill McPherson each won an individual event and placed second in another Tuesday to lead the Gaels to victory in a three-team home meet.

Nieves won the 100-meter dash in 13.4 seconds and was second in the 200. McPherson placed first in the discus with a throw of 122 feet, 2 inches and finished second in the shot put for the Gaels, who had 112 points.

Silverado was second with 96, and Durango had eight points.

Gorman’s Emilia Puskas won the 1,600 (5:33.4) and ran on the winning 3,200 relay team, and teammate Geraldine Valencia won the 800 (2:42.6) and ran a leg of the 3,200 relay.

Silverado’s Grace Cunningham won the high jump (5-4) and long jump (17-10).

Boys

At Gorman, Massimiliano Swenson and Donovan Smith each won two events to lead the Gaels to victory in a four-team meet.

Swenson won the 800 in 2:08.03 and the 1,600 in 4:41.9. He also ran on the winning 3,200 relay team.

Smith swept the hurdle events, taking the 110 high hurdles in 15.2 and the 300 low hurdles in 41.1.

Zion Branch won the triple jump (42-0) and ran on the winning 400 and 800 relay teams for the Gaels, who finished with 100 points. Silverado was second with 80½, followed by Durango with 32½ and The Meadows with five.

Durango’s Justin Johnson won the 100 (11.3) and 200 (23.35).
