Small-school boys: Desert Pines captures Class 3A Southern Region title

Jordan Howden and Jamel Brown each won two individual events and led the Desert Pines boys track team to victory in the Class 3A Southern Region meet at Overton on Saturday.

Howden won the 100-meter dash in 11.65 seconds, just .01 ahead of teammate Devin McGee. Howden also covered 21 feet, 4¾ inches to finish first in the long jump.

Brown collected wins in both the 110 hurdles (15.0) and the 300 hurdles (40.37).

The Jaguars’ Darnell Washington was first in the shot put, with a mark of 47-0½ and second in the discus.

Desert Pines finished with 139 points. Mojave was second with 133. Pahrump Valley (111), Western (69) and Cheyenne (60) rounded out the top five.

Pahrump’s Bryce Odegard won three events, taking the 800 in 1:58.19, the 1,600 in 4:40.63 and the 3,200 in 10:18.3.

The top five finishers in each event advance to the state meet, which begins Friday in Carson City.

Class 2A

Lincoln County’s Noah Smith earned a spot in four events in the state meet, winning three events and finishing third in another in the Class 2A Southern Region meet.

Smith won the 100 in 12.0, the 200 in 23.29 and the 110 hurdles in 16.59, and Landen Smith won the 400 (51.07) and 300 hurdles (43.31) and was second in the 100 and 200 to help the Lynx to a second-place finish in the team standings.

White Pine breezed to the title with 206½ points. Lincoln County was second with 130. The Meadows took third with 81, and Calvary Chapel was fourth with 66.

The Meadows’ Ian Cook won both the 1,600 (4:43.5) and 3,200 (10:47.14), and teammate Shahzaib Akbar won the shot put (42-10) and took second in the discus.

The top four finishers in each event move on to the state meet, beginning Friday in Carson City.

Class 1A

Tyrese Traylor won three individual events and finished second in another as Spring Mountain ran away with its 10th consecutive Class 1A Southern Region title.

Traylor won the 110 hurdles in 15.95, the 300 hurdles in 43.45 and the 200 in 23.61. He was second in the 100.

The Golden Eagles’ Ra’vaun Nibblet cleared 6-2 to win the high jump and finished second in the long jump, triple jump and 400.

Spring Mountain finished with 337½ points. Pahranagat Valley was second with 126 points. Beatty was third with 102½, and Tonopah took fourth with 49.

Beatty’s Jose Granados won the 800 in 2:06.86, the 1,600 in 4:40.32 and the 3,200 in 10:41.80 and was fourth in the pole vault.

Tonopah’s Brandon Jemerigbe won the 100 in 12.66 and the 400 in 52.31.
