SMALL-SCHOOL TRACK: McCoy leads Desert Pines boys to I-A title

Artise McCoy won three individual events Friday and Saturday to lead Desert Pines’ boys track team to the title at the Division I-A Southern Region meet at Boulder City.

McCoy edged teammate Amari Calvillo-Tatum to win the 400-meter dash in 48.64 seconds. Tatum finished in 48.85.

McCoy also won the 100 in 10.74, and the 200 in 22.17 as the Jaguars captured the title with 116 points. Faith Lutheran was second with 74½ followed by Mojave (66) and Pahrump Valley (60).

Desert Pines also won the 400, 1,600 and 3,200 relays to roll to the title.

Moapa Valley’s R.J. Hubert had a big meet individually. Hubert cleared 6 feet, 4 inches to win the high jump, and captured the 110 hurdles in 15.26. He finished second in the long jump, and Virgin Valley’s Kai Mitchell nipped him in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 39.84 to 39.86 for Hubert.

Del Sol’s Jonathan Spearman won the triple jump (45-0) and long jump (22-2½) and finished third in the high jump.

Boulder City’s Sam Gomez swept the throws, posting a mark of 179-8 to win the discus and taking the shot put with a throw of 51-7¼.

Mitchell also placed second in the 110 hurdles.

Sunrise Mountain’s Musio Jimenez-Vazquez, Faith Lutheran’s Chase Wood and Pahrump’s Bryce Odegard all had strong distance showings.

Jimenez-Vazquez won the 3,200 in 10:21.52 and placed second in the 800 and 1,600.

Wood won the 1,600 (4:38.22), was second in the 3,200 and third in the 800.

Odegard won the 800 (1:58.73), placed third in the 1,600 and was fourth in the 3,200.

Mojave’s Nick Kline cleared 13 feet to win the pole vault.

In the I-A girls meet, the distance duo of Maggie Shuirman and Kendall Larson helped Faith Lutheran capture the team title with 146½ points.

Shuirman won the 3,200 in 12:17.14, was second in the 800 and third in the 1,600. Larson won the 1,600 in 5:42.44, finished third in the 800 and fourth in the 3,200.

Ohemaa Dixon cleared 9-0 to win the pole vault for the Crusaders, and teammate Bryanna Neagle won the high jump by clearing 5-2.

Sierra Vista’s Kayla Smith won the long jump (17-0½) and 400 (58.74) as the Mountain Lions finished second with 119 points. Mojave was third with 82½, and Cheyenne finished fourth with 79.

Audrey Dayton won the 300 hurdles in 47.22 and placed second in the long jump for Sierra Vista, and Sarriah Brown won the 800 (2:27.21) for the Mountain Lions.

Sunrise Mountain’s Nina Carpenter won the triple jump (35-7) and was second in the high jump.

Cheyenne’s Koreyl Godbolt won the shot put (37-11) and was fourth in the discus, and Spring Valley’s Charlene Charles won the 100 hurdles (16.26) and finished third in the 400.

Cheyenne’s Angela Hammond won the 200 (26.25), Mojave’s Charleea Armstrong won the 100 (12.82) and Desert Pines’ Kiera Haley was first in the discus (104-1).

DIVISION III

Tyler Frehner won the 110 hurdles (15.95) and was second in the 300 hurdles to lead Lincoln County to the boys team title with 165 points.

White Pine (143½) was second, and The Meadows (112) finished third.

Calvary Chapel’s Cameron Varela won the high jump (6-0), 800 (2:02.73) and 400 (52.48).

Agassi Prep’s Zeivaun Ned won the 100 (11.11) and 200 (22.42), and White Pine’s Sam Stewart was first in the 1,600 (4:48.75) and 3,200 (10:46.34).

In the girls meet, Madison Rick won the high jump (4-10), 100 (13.54) and 200 (27.43) to lead White Pine to the team title with 234 points. Agassi Prep was second with 127, and The Meadows was third with 104.

The Meadows’ Ellen Hirsbirg won the 400 (59.1), 800 (2:23.75) and 1,600 (5:24.91).

DIVISION IV

Donte Sudduth and O’Shea Jones each won three events as Spring Mountain rolled to the team title with 309 points. Beatty was second with 99½.

Sudduth won the pole vault (10-7), 1,600 (5:11.75) and 3,200 (11:47.91) and placed second in the 800. Jones won the 110 hurdles (16.74), 300 hurdles (41.74) and 100 (11.51) and was third in the 200.

Word of Life’s Gregory Gilbert won the 200 (23.24) and 400 (50.73).

In the girls meet, Jasmin Pelayo-Leal won the 1,600 (6:36.37) and 3,200 (15:09.21) to lead Beatty to the team title with 179 points. Tonopah was second with 131.

Kayla Campos won the long jump (14-0¼) and 100 (14.08) for the Muckers.
