SMALL SCHOOLS: Jones, Spring Mountain sprint to 1A Southern League title

Dominic Jones set two league meet records and won two other events to carry Spring Mountain’s boys to the Class 1A Southern League track and field championship Saturday at Overton.

Jones set records in the 100 (11.17 seconds) and 200 meters (22.63). He also won the long jump (20 feet, 11 inches) and was a member of the Eagles’ 400 relay team, which won in a meet-record 45.88.

Jones helped Spring Mountain score 241 points, ahead of runner-up Beatty (102).

Joi Goynes and Krystal Onyema won two events each to lift Faith Lutheran to the 3A Southern League girls title.

Goynes won the 100 (12.89) and 200 (26.54), and Onyema won the long jump (15-5½) and triple jump (35-5¼). Faith Lutheran scored 262 points, beating Moapa Valley (156) and Boulder City (126).

Also for Faith Lutheran, Keely Bakken won the 1,600 (5:42.57) and 3,200 (12:36.02). Boulder City’s Cally Stanton won the 100 hurdles (17.96) and 300 hurdles (49.82).

Boulder City won the boys title with 204 points, followed by Faith Lutheran and Virgin Valley (tied at 174½) and Moapa Valley (107).

Faith Lutheran’s John Cartier won the 100 (11.43), 200 (23.02), 400 (51.17) and anchored the Crusaders’ winning 400 relay team (46.02).

Virgin Valley’s Alex Thurston won the 100 hurdles (15.92) and 300 hurdles (41.77), and Shandon Miera won the long jump (19-6½) and triple jump (39-8¼).

Calvary Chapel’s girls won the 2A Southern League title with 188 points, followed by The Meadows (155½).

The Meadows had three double winners: Kristyna Fong in the 100 hurdles (17.9) and long jump (14-8½); Lauren Henry in the 100 (12.97) and 200 (27.57); and Brianna Capanna in the shot put (30-10½) and discus (100-5).

Calvary Chapel’s Sammy Forsberg won the 1,600 (6:00.92) and 3,200 (14:05.11).

White Pine’s boys (252½) edged Calvary Chapel (236).

Beatty took the 1A Southern League girls title.
