TRACK: Martinez helps Virgin Valley boys to title

Rich Martinez won two events Friday to help the Virgin Valley boys track and field team capture first place at the Bulldog Early Bird Invitational in Mesquite.

Martinez finished first in the 300-meter hurdles in 43.74 seconds and took the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 10 inches.

Virgin Valley also won the 400 (45.03), 800 (1:38.80) and 1600 (3:50.03) relays on the way to 222 points.

R.J. Hubert won the 100 meters in 11.72 seconds and added a first-place finish in the 110 hurdles (16.29) for Moapa Valley, which was second in the team standings with 135 points.

Beatty’s Enrique Orozco was the other double-winner on the boys side, taking the 800 (2:12.56) and 1,600 (4:58.92).

In the girls meet, Kaydee Bingham of Virgin Valley won the 100 (13.48) and 200 (28.54) and also anchored the Bulldogs’ victorious 400 relay (52.56).

Abigail Barnum won the 300 hurdles (51.13) and a leg on the 400 relay to help Virgin Valley finish second in the team standings with 142½ points.

White Pine won the team title with 165½ points as Caitlin Stanton won the 800 and 1,600 for the Bobcats.

Desert Pines won the 800 (1:55.6), 1600 (4:26.87) and 3200 (11:55.81) relays on the way to a third-place team finish with 115½ points.

Tonopah’s Ashley Gray won the shot put (29-9) and the discus (86-11).
