Zoey Bonds won four individual events to spark Centennial to the Class 5A state girls track and field championship Saturday at Reed High School in Sparks.
The Centennial girls are going for their 10th straight state track and field championship, while the boys event appears to be a race among four teams for the crown.
The Canyon Springs boys did most of their damage in five events, and the Palo Verde girls edged Shadow Ridge to win the Class 4A state track and field meet.
The result disappointed Vashti Cunningham, but her father Randall is encouraged by her improvement from a 13th-place finish at the 2016 Olympics.
Bishop Gorman graduate Vashti Cunningham will compete in the high jump final Saturday at the Olympics. Her dad and coach is former NFL and UNLV quarterback Randall Cunningham.
Zachariah Branch won three events to lead the Bishop Gorman boys track team to the Class 5A regional track championship. Centennial won its 11th girls title in a row.
The Desert Oasis boys posted 195 points and the Palo Verde girls had 163 to win the team titles at the Class 4A Desert Region track and field meet Wednesday at Desert Oasis High.
Track and field meets this season have been limited to four teams. That will change at this week’s regional meets, where as many as 10 teams will compete.

Centennial ran away with its ninth straight Class 4A team championship. The Bulldogs scored 126 points. Runners-up Carson and Sierra Vista each had 54.
